I was skeptical their repair rates were actually that cheap! I might just have to do that then, thank you!
Uniden holds to the flat rate price, even if the repair, if priced a la carte, should be higher. The only time that changes is if the unit is so badly damaged as to be just about irreparable. That might be the case if the unit had, say, fallen out of the window of a moving vehicle, but not a 'simple' broken display.
Just FYI, I sent an SDS100 in for repair last Spring and it took about 8 weeks to get it back (after some email prodding). Not sure what the current turn-around time is, but as is the case with everything else these days, it may be delayed. It did come back fully repaired, though. Make sure you list everything that is wrong with it.
I have not had to send anything in recently, but comments on turn-a-round time improving have become more common, such as a two or three week turn. But earlier in the year, and at times last year, repair time did stretch into a couple of months ir more. I think the biggest issue right now is if "your" scanner requires a part that is in short supply, resulting in a back-order without a confirm-able availability date.
