Excellent delivery, lots of new things. I wish i had bought one of these instead of a xxx-### (read: product that competes with this to some extent). The features in the paid upgrade sound great, and definitely worth paying a reasonable price for. Those features would make it feel like a brand new scanner.

I'm excited about the release of the updates / upgrades but the upgrade price has me a little concerned. I've seen this happen before with other vendors were they planned on announcing a price of an upgrade and then later held off releasing the information at the last minute due to some technical reason, etc so it wouldn't effect sales of the current item with news of upgrades on the horizon. Then when the priced was released for the long awaited upgrade people were shocked when it was almost $100. Previous upgrades were only around $40. There reasoning behind the huge price increase was in there words "due to the development team having to start from the ground up and the time/effort involved in designing the new features, etc" was why they felt they needed to price the upgrade so high.

Everyone was pissed at first but after the dust settled people started paying the $100 for the upgrade. It was one of those did we need it? If we didn't then we were left behind and didn't have the features that others were experiencing.

With all that said, don't be shocked when Uniden finally releases the price because regardless of what it is, there will be those who will pay regardless of what it is just to have the latest and greatest, myself include. Again I could be wrong but as I've said before, I've seen this before so I'm a little apprehensive with the sudden delay in price release after it was original announced that it would be released.

If you ever had experance with software programs or games like flight simulator, PMDG, or any of the FPS games, then you know what I'm talking about.

Hope no one gets irate, but $100 for the UPGRADE would be a no-brainer for me, almost like getting a completely new radio.

I am not saying it will be that much by any means. I was just saying from past experience that you never know until it is released. I for one am hopeful but I've also been disappointed to were I plan for the worse and hope for the best.

You could almost make a Poll question and see what people think it might be.

If it's anywhere near $100 Uniden better pack their bags!

Why would anyone invest $700 in a entry level scanner? I cant see anything more than maybe $19.95.

HP1 $599.99, Software $29.95, Website Subscription $30.00, Upgrades ???? Things are just getting stupid around here!

Seriously? A poll where people can speculate about the upgrade price? What a complete waste of time.

You can buy the HP-1 from on-line retailers for less than $500. The scanner comes with software for managing the data in the scanner. The software includes access to the RR database. If you are choosing to use a software product from a third-party source at additional cost, that's your decision, not Uniden's.

Dude...you have lost touch with all reality.
Nothing you typed above is even remotely accurate.
You can find the HP-1 on sale for under $500 through many retailers.
The Sentinel software is free and comes with the radio when purchased.
Sentinel is the only software you have to have to make full use of the HomePatrols features.
In Addition you can also download Power Patrol from scannow.org for free.
In Addition you don't need a premium subscription to RR.com.
Full US & Canada Database updates are FREE and are available weekly.
We get it. You hate Uniden. But making uninformed, grossly inaccurate, and bogus posts like above only hurts your credibility here at RR.com.

Believe me, the engineers are quite busy working on polishing up the release. That is their job (and they do it quite well). My efforts do not take away from that, and, I hope, actually enhances the experience for you by giving you more information about what is coming before you buy.

Given all of the great additions to automated logging and recording, is there anything about increasing the size of flash card that can be supported? I believe the existing size is 2GB, and was curious to know if support for larger sizes is a hardware or software limitation?

While Uniden only supports the 2GB card, I have seen reports of others successfully using larger cards.

I have a 4GB in my HP1 right now. I have a spare 32GB hanging around - I'll copy the data over and see what happens.

EDIT: Copied the data over using a microSD to SD adapter in my netbook, copying to my netbook and then to the 32. Put the 32 in the HP1 and powered it on, and it appears to be working fine. Same behavior as it did when I changed from the 2GB to the 4.

However, when I was testing the 4GB, if I recall correctly, it took over 5 days of 24x7 recording to fill up the card (or at least get to where the scanner said "Card nearly full, recording stopped" which was IIRC with 25% space remaining). So I may not be able to fill up the 32 before the update is out :D

Just added to the blog article the following paragraph:

UPDATE: The HomePatrol-1 Extreme Upgrade will be available for only $99.99 from Uniden.com. But, we want to take care of those of you who have already bought the HomePatrol-1. We will soon add a link to prepurchase the upgrade for only $49.99. In order to prepurchase, you will need to provide us with the electronic serial number of your HomePatrol-1 so that we can provide you with a registration key that is specific to your HomePatrol-1. Having that in hand, you’ll be ready to activate the Extreme features as soon as we release the update. Once we release the update, the price will go to the normal $99.99 price.

So if you buy in the future you get punished.

Some features you'll be paying for have been standard in various scanners for years, like limit search, status & discovery, and band scope.

Too bad Uniden couldn't provide those for free, and provide their premium features at a lower cost. $100 is almost 20% of the original purchase price!

To each their own...
