Homepatrol 1 in Hickory NC

I am VERY new to this stuff -this is my first post! I am looking to recieve Hickory NC police. I am looking at a Home Patrol 1. I looked up all the frequency lists and digital info in this forum.

What I can't figure out is if I need a scanner that recieves digital P-25 phase 2 TDMA transmissions to pick up Hickory police. The HomePatrol 1 only picks up digital P-25 phase 1 TDMA transmissions correct? Will a HomePatrol 1 work? Or do I need a Homepatol 2?

You are good to go...as far as what the Radio Reference database shows. There is NO P25 phase 2 in your area. Catawba county, Hickory PD, and VIPER don't show encrypted either. There is some info that VIPER reception is poor in Catawba county.

Viper coverage in Catawba County is very good even in building in the town of Hickory which we all know the system was not designed for. There are 3 towers physically located in the county and almost half a dozen more that provide coverage into the county. I can say with high certainty coverage in Catawba County is over 95% in street coverage with a handheld radio at face level.

The City of Hickory system covers in the city limits fairly well but outside of that area coverage is not the best. It simply isn't designed to cover a large geographic area. I suspect they are running directional antennas but have nothing to back that up. They do have what I think are console patches from the Open Sky system to the P25 Phase I system. The P25 system was not their primary system the last time I monitored all primary traffic was on the Open Sky system with just a patch to HPD on P25.

Thank you Quantar. The last time I saw a scanner was in the 1970's. I worked at Radio Shack my first job out of college and it was Halloween my first day of work. I still remember all the criminal mischief calls in Buffalo NY area where I was. Most of my commission came from selling CB's and scanners. I fell in love with the hobby.

This is so much more complex than punch in your frequency and hit "enter" of the olden day scanner. I'm trying to catch up on the technology. Just bought a Home Patrol 1 on Ebay to get started. Can't wait for it to get here!
