I have a new homepatrol 2 scanner. I have had it for 4 days now, I put in the batteries that came with the unit and I can not get it to come on using battery power. I have plugged it into the wall to charge for 14 hours like I was supposed to but it still won't work on battery power. It does work when it is plugged into the wall though. How do I get it to come on with battery power?

Thank you.

When you connected the scanner to the power supply, did you answer 'yes' to the "charge batteries?" prompt? Did you ever get the indicator led that charging had started? Also, what kind of power supply are you using? The HP-2 does not come with a power supply/charger, and many that are provided with cell phones don't produce enough current. You need one that can supply around 2amps (2000 milliamps).

As the doctor noted, try a different set of batteries, even a set of alkalines to see if it will power up on just batteries. Of course, don't try to charge alkaline batteries, but that would at least confirm whether or not the scanner will work on battery power. If it will, then either one of the original batteries is defective (or it could be too far discharged for the scanner to charge it), or your power adapter is not supplying enough current. I use an external smart charger, and have several sets of Eneloop batteries for use in my scanners.

The fact that the batteries came with it is no guarantee of their quality. You probably don't know how long they've been sitting on the shelf. Long inactivity can beckon a death knell for some rechargeables. All it takes is one bad battery to keep it from operating.

Does the red charge light come on?

As others said - you need a higher amp USB wart - 2.5 amp or so. A lot of the older and cheaper ones are 1 amp or so.

I have put a set of known working alkalines in it to see if it will power on over battery power and it does not. When it had the rechargeable batteries in it, I had it plugged into a 5.1V 2.1A iPad USB charger. I do not get a prompt to say "yes" to charge the batteries it just comes on and starts scanning.

The red charge light does not come on at all.

OK, since it will not power up with known good alkalines, and also it never offered to charge batteries, when using an adapter with enough output to both charge and run the scanner, then this may be a repair issue. If you purchased it new, then unless damaged (which does not seem to be the case), repair would be covered by the warranty. Uniden's servers are currently down, and are not projected to be back up before Tuesday at the earliest. Their office is moving. But, once they are back up, start your repair request here:
Repair rates
Usually, for in-warranty repair, they will want a copy of your proof of purchase, to validate coverage under the one year warranty. If you purchased it used, you can find the rates for repair on that same page. There is a form to fill out with details of the problem, and generally, they advise to not ship it with the batteries, the memory cord, or antenna.

Even the "repair" portion of their computers is down. Everything is down until Tuesday.
