I am interested in getting a new scanner and have had my eye on the Homepatrol. I have two questions, first I work in the Marin County area which is covered by the MERA system. I want to primarily scan Fire/EMS and police. A co-worker says the Homepatrol will not cover these frequencies. Is this true? Also, I have read and read about the frustrations others have had with the Homepatrol not living up to its ease of use claims. Is this really true?

On my Home Patrol I typed in my location as Marin County. It started scanning and I hit hold. It happened to have stopped on the MERA system. It shows 5 sites, 33 departments and 184 channels. It should be in the RR database for you to check out further.

My guess is it would work.

I live in Sacramento county, so very little chance of hearing it from here.

Yep, the HP-1 supports a variety of trunking formats, including UHF Motorola Smartzone and digital voice modulation (which is what MERA uses).

I live in Sausalito and bought my HomePatrol just about a yer ago. MERA (both police and fire) is all I monitor -- works very well.
