I did the best research I could. I narrowed it down to Uniden Bearcat Home Patrol or GRE PSR-800.
As you can see I am going for the pre-programmed types.
HomePatrol touch screen is good but freq range is limited.
PSR-800 virtually the same but more freq range.
If you had the choice, Which would you choose?
I am buying for my 85 yr old mom.

home patrol will be easier to use in my opinion just because you can edit so much with it from the device the psr-800 is a batter scanner with some features i would personally use myself but i am an advanced user, the prs-800 has to have software programmed in, but with the home patrol everything can be set up super easy on the device so since it's for your mom go with the home patrol.

As an owner of various scanner models, and a PSR-800, I have to agree. The Uniden scanners are much easier to program and operate right out of the box and the Homepatrol is no exception. The GRE PSR-800 is a great scanner; however, it will need regular connectivity to a computer for updates and changes, as will the Homepatrol. That said, at least on the Homepatrol, you can update frequencies and other various data on the fly, without the need for a computer, this simply isn't the case on the PSR-800, whereas you can only view the information or update it from pre-programmed data from the database loaded on the sd-card; a major short-coming for this radio considering all of the other engineering that went into it.

For ease of use, you can't beat the Homepatrol... Good luck with which-ever way you go!

Having both, I'd recommend the HP-1 for your Mom.

HomePatrol touch screen is good but freq range is limited.
PSR-800 virtually the same but more freq range.

I'm not sure where you're seeing that the PSR-800 has a wider frequency range than the HomePatrol. Here is the breakdown:

HomePatrol
25-54
108-512
758-824
849-869
894-960

PSR-800
25-54
108-174
216-512
764-782
791-797
806-824
849-870
894-960
1240-1300

The HomePatrol covers 108-512 continuous, the PSR-800 has a gap between 174-216.

The HomePatrol's 700 MHz coverage is continuous between 758-824, the PSR-800 starts at 764 and has several large gaps in 700 MHz coverage. This is due to an issue GRE has with images in the upper 700 band, so they are forced to eliminate a large chunk of the band in all of their scanners.

The PSR-800 covers the 23cm ham band 1240-1300, which the HomePatrol does not.

So basically what it boils down to is that the HomePatrol has better coverage, unless you need to listen to 23cm ham.

Scannermaster is usually among the cheapest, I bought my HP-1 and PSR-800 from their showroom in person.

Well I think Amazon or ScannerMaster would have the best price.
