This maybe just speculation but I was wondering if anyone may have heard of horry county police possibly going encrypted I know that they do have some talk groups encrypted as I listen to them all the time I just heard whispers about all of them going encrypted which would be a shame I have been listening to them for a little better than 40 years since the early 80s back when they were on VHF the good old days

I heard that is good solid information. Encryption for all PD in the future. Didn't mention FD. Got info from a state radio gal who is in the know.

Lots of major changes to many systems in Southeast US in 2025 including Horry. EMS is already encrypted on incoming side to hospitals in area. Not sure what services other than PD will do, Fire Admin has no public info at this time. Hate it but progress moves on.

J. Reuben Long Detention Center (Horry County jail) TGs have been encrypted for some time. Same for the Myrtle Beach International Airport (MYR) TGs on the Horry County Public Safety Trunked Radio System.

Thanks. The header threw me off.

Straighten me out if I am off base, but this seems to coincide with Myrtle Beach's inability to control their gangs in the city. We've vacationed on the south end for almost 40 years and it seems recently there have been significant gang incidents in the city during recent trips.

I always found that monitoring law enforcement to be reassuring that they wanted us to know they were doing their job. Closing out the public won't make the headlines go away. It certainly doesn't inspire confidence, at least from my family.

You will still be able to monitor horry county police on their south dispatch channels for now hopefully they won't go over to the dark side being the fact that they have encrypted talk groups for surveillance purposes

I hope so I understand that for sensitive info there being encrypted channels for that and I'm all for it but for normal day to day comms just keep it in the clear

Reasonable approach that should be embraced as law enforcement preaches transparency. Patrol channels maintain radio discipline and encryption is available when circumstances dictate. Builds public trust.

Is anyone aware of any advance notice to the public from the City of Myrtle Beach that its Police Department would begin encrypting ALL of their radio communications? Any requests for pubic comment? Any discussions before the City Council?

Four days in, and I am not aware of any media reporting. Is it possible that they don't know? Don't care?
