Hello everyone,
I think it was on Saturday night Dec.11 around 11:00pm.
There was a call about shots fired on the Eastside and a possible hostage situation. It turned out the incident was happening just around the corner from my home……great!

Anyway the command post was setup and it was very interesting listening. They called in SWAT and evacuated a couple of homes. They even took a section of fence down to gain access to the backyard of the house involved. Snipers were setup and in position. There was at least 20 police cars, EMS and a lot of private vehicles as SWAT members begin showing up.
Then it seemed to slow down and I lost most of the “tactical” communications. I could tell things were happening but seemed to be missing parts of the conversations.

There was enough to keep me interested but I’m pretty sure I missed something.

This was by far the most exciting thing I’ve listened to.
Did anyone else hear any of this?

It turns out there were some shots fired at two officers and they were pinned down for a short period. A woman and child were removed from the house and then the waiting game started as everything was setup.

The whole thing ended around 6:00am. The Salvation Army even showed up with their van and was making coffee and sandwiches for everyone.
It was only mentioned a little in the news, long after it was over.

Anyone have info on where the other radio traffic might have been? I didn’t want to miss anything so I didn’t do a lot of searching but what little I did do I couldn’t find anything that sounded like it was involved in this incident.

Thanks,
Jeff

I think you guys are talking about the ol boy who got bean bagged !!!
It was friday night and it was south side who originally made the call and later switched to TAC 10.
He although had no hostages but himself and was planning to be shot By police.

Hostage in Wichita

Thanks tlmacd, Next time I'll try those.

Hi Buckskinner33,
I know I said East side but it was really Southeast, in fact just a few blocks east of Boston Park. The situation lasted over 5 hours and I watched most of it out my window. I finally went to bed about 4:00am. My wife said she heard them leaving around 5:00 to 6:00am.
I’m not sure what happened to the guy, but they did bring a woman and baby out of the garage and EMS was looking at them. For a while they thought he was in the basement. Then later they were searching further east towards the creek that runs behind the area.
Anyway all the talk was on talk group 48. They may have bean bagged him but I’m not sure.
All the excitement wore me out, hi.
If I can find any other info, I'll post it.

By the way, what do you guys think of the Bearcat 246T?
Seems like a pretty slick little radio.

Thanks,
Jeff

Well then we must be talking about another crazy day and another crazy time here in wichita. Im afraid I didnt hear that one.

Wish I did...

BTW...Your on the East patrol stomping ground, So it was probly the East PD call.

As far as scanners are concerned. Im in the market for a new rig myself with the new changes that are being made to the Sedgwick co. Radio Sys.

Ive been looking at this rig from Uniden, The BC785D - APCO P-25 Capable Scanner. Its pricey but well worth it. Plus u can run the radio from your PC, Im not talking about programming it but actually control the radio!!!
Pretty Cool ...Huh?

If I get another Hand held It will Probly be a Pro-96...Or any other APCO-25 compatable radio.

BTY... Im In the North end of town...

Hi and Welcome to the group....Just an off topic to this post.

What type of scanners do you guys all use and how well do you like them?

I have a Pro-2067 and a Pro 93, There ok for now but Im looking to up grade to a Uniden. I need somthing that can handle a APCO-25 system when the county makes that change.

Second Question is how often do you listen to your scanners.?

I have the pro 95, I really like it except for the fact that you cannot manually change channels like you could in previous scanners. If i ever upgrade I may do the pro 96. I listen everyday. I use a motorola stx as my scanner, it has better volume, I can also talk to my dispatcher if I need.

Just FYI, I was the dispatcher on the 2nd half of that SWAT callout. It was on Patrol East and they found the guy later that morning in a house on Bedell street. He was sleeping in his girlfriends bedroom. Sheriffs officers made the arrest. He wasn't beanbagged.
