I know it’s all location-dependent, and am aware of the military freqs for Indiana listed in the database. Haven’t lived in Indiana all that long and curious if others find the military environment across the state to be very active? I’m also ex-Air Force and know there can be a lot of variance to radio activity depending on whether a facility is active duty, guard or reserve, and what is going on day to day for normal ops versus exercises and such. I’m thinking about programming one of my lesser-used scanners for just military, and hoping to get a general feel for how others perceive the military listening here. Thanks in advance.

Indiana has an Air Force Reserve base north of Kokomo, A National Guard Air Cav in Shelbyville, An Air Guard base in Ft Wayne, and various National Guard units in most larger cities. The Army Pay center was located in Indy, but I believe it was closed many years ago. I also know there used to be a Naval depot in southern Indiana. I don’t know if it’s still active. There are KC-135s at Grissom, A -10s at Ft Wayne, and Blackhawks at Shelbyville. Maybe someone else will chime in here with more current info, since I’ve been out for thirty plus years. I don’t believe there are any active military installations in Indiana

The 317
USAF Security Forces at Hulman Field are fairly active on SAFE-T. Hilltop MOA on 350.350 usually has something going on. USNSWC Crane is still active. The 122nd FW in Fort Wayne is in the process of receiving F-16s and they stay pretty busy.

Again? The 122nd used to have F-16s back in the nineties after transitioning from F-4s and then later transitioned to A-10s

Camp Atterbury near Edinburgh is a federally-owned military post leased to the Indiana National Guard as a training facility. Atterbury also housed around 7,500 Afghan refugees a few years ago. I remember driving north on I-65 in the Columbus area one evening while a training exercise was happening at Atterbury. It was eerie seeing trails of light coming out of the sky as paratroopers jumped out of helicopters.

Atterbury is also associated with the Muscatatuck Urban Training Center east of Seymour. This is a retired mental hospital that is used as a training center for various state and federal military and civilian agencies. On occasion, there are large-scale training exercises held at Muscatatuck that include amateur radio operators in support of Indiana DHS.

Still active. Major General Emmett J. Bean Federal Center

I also know there used to be a Naval depot in southern Indiana.
Still active. Naval Sea Systems Command > Home > Warfare Centers > NSWC Crane

I did some work at Crane many years ago. Worked on an ordinance test lab and a submarine battery facility. Of course, there are rumors that the Ark of the Covenant is stored in a bunker at Crane.

AK9R beat me to it. Lol. Camp Atterbury in Edinburgh is pretty active and there is a lot that comes through there. The C-130s from Louisville fly up regularly to do pallet drops and sandbag drops at Atterbury. They also shoot approaches regularly at KBAK in Columbus, often on Thursdays evenings among other days. Those may be a stretch for you in range if you are in Avon, but there is good activity. The Civil Air Patrol is also active in the state and has several large scale activities annually at Atterbury and Columbus.
