How can you tell the difference on BCD396 Silk Screen difference?

Hi guys,
My first post.. so please go easy on me.. first thing first, I have seached and searched but nothing can tell me the difference between the ones that will wore off when you use it for a while and the one that was replaced and not suppose to wear off. will one be shinner than the other? I want to purchase one soon, but would like to be able to tell if they have the newer version of silk screen or not to save the time to send the radio back.

Ask a reputable dealer if the scanner would have the silk-screen problem. I think both of these dealers have a 1-800 number.

The only difference is that if you leave a bad one in a hot car for about an hour, you'll be able to rub off some of the print, if you press hard enough and rub vigorously enough. You can always clear-coat the labels to make sure they won't come off. (Test on an inside spot first, to make sure you aren't using something that will melt the plastic.)

I think normal wear will reveal the defect. I wouldn't recommend trying to cause a problem. Many people found the defect within days of normal use. If your silkscreen starts to disappear, you have a defective one. I'm sure I could rub enough to get even a normal one to wear. After all, it's not embedded in the plastic.

My print came off with just a simple touch to the ink. It will be easily noticed!

Mine came off pretty easily when your fingers were damp with sweat or body oils (did not have to rub it at all). I was at a the radio shop today and I looked at soem new ones in the display and the case looks different almost a fine pebbley finish and if you looke closely from the sides it looks like the labels are under a clear coat. I really think to tell the difference you have to be able to compare a good one to a bad one.

When I get mine I will know from what rhutch said if it has some clear coat over the labels, if not I will just use it and see if it rubs off..

I asked a question similar to this in another post and never received a response. :-(

Glenn Cohen at Scanners Unlimited says they have both some old stock 396's and newer ones with the "non wearing" faceplates. He says they can tell by the date code on the box as well as the serial numbers which is which. However, unless I'm missing something, there's no date code on the box that I can find.

I would be interested in what serial numbers appear on the older samples and on the new "non wearing" samples. Please post this information if you know it.

I think that the Date Code" is in the series of numbers used for the serial number.
