You can get into Amateur radio as a hobby. To find out more info, look at this web site:
QRZ.COM

You can buy a scanner and listen to two way radio communications as a hobby, you don't need a license for that.

However, if I understand your post correctly, you cannot talk to fire fighters as a "hobby", nor any other public safety or commercial business frequency or system. To do so would be illegal. You can listen only. If you want to talk, your best bet would be to go for your amateur radio license, but anyone else you talk to must also have their own amateur radio license, and you can only use approved amateur radio frequencies.

Or, you can talk using cheap FRS or MURS radios, no license is required to use these.

Unfortunately for him, he posted his email address here, which means, though no fault of RR, it will be harvested by bots and result in an ever-increasing avalanche of spam for him. When the mods close this thread, which will be soon, they should edit out his email addy.

I would like to get into two way radios as a hobby. I have used one (radio) for many years in the fire department and I'd like to get my FCC license and buy some programming software...kind of like a hobby with HAM radios. Can someone tell me how to get them (license). Email me if you can help me. Again, it's only as a hobby!

I tried my best =D

Reminds me of a guy on another forum I used to frequent. He has horrible spelling, punctuation, grammar, etc., but he was actually a really nice guy. I'm not entirely sure what his story was - I think he explained at one point or another that he had some sort of learning disability. Over time the members of the forum got to know him and that even though his posts were difficult to read, that he was a nice guy and contributed a lot to the forum. I'm sure some people couldn't handle his posts so they just skipped over them, but for the people who read them, they knew he was doing his best.

It's like if somebody had down syndrome and started talking to you while you were out in public...would you really laugh at them and "buy a fire extinguisher" so to speak, or would you wait patiently and try to understand what they were saying to you?
