I was wondering since scanners regularly monitor analog frequencies and a few monitor digital formats for known trunked systems, what systems or ways does law enforment or similar agencies use to track down on those digital communications, do they have a scanner with a discriminator tap and a computer to decode? My question is due to the fact that in the future many interesting frequencies are becoming digital such as cordless phones, cell, nextel, police etc. In the past is was much fun to have the capacity to explore many pre-digital frequencies like airphones, not so much to snoop (they were boring), but rather to explore interesting frequencies.

There are commercially available IDEN decoders for monitoring Nextel, Southern Linc, and other IDEN networks. Some of the ones I have seen run aroung 30K so your average consumer, can't afford one.

Most law enforcement don't worry about trying to monitor.

If they need to listen to or use another agencies system they get a radio on that system or they are interconneccted in the infrastructure.

If they need to monitor a phone they get a court order and have the carrier provide them the connection.

Thats true but how about foreign govermentes or private investigators or even drug trafficers, here in mexico there are some very powerful drug trafficers or even political parties monitoring each other.

I just bought a radio from Universal Radio Inc. and in their catalog they sell this AOR radio surveillance system which is a combination of an AOR5000A with a spectrum analizer that can also be a vector analyzer for use in monitoring digital comunications. Data packets in PDC, PHS and GSM formats that can be displayed and identifyied in binary and its also possible to see hex information. This unit is no joke is costs 6899.95 is this actually capable of monitoring digital communiations? If not what is its purpose? Here is the link for some info

Well, bringing that home would get me a pretty good ass-chewing from my wife. That would be meaningful.

But yeah, I agree... average moe is not gonna get much out of that setup other than sticker shock and the occasional "wow" from a neighbor. I can see it now....

"Yeah isn't this something? Cost me 7 grand."

"Wow, so what can you do with it?"

"I don't know. It cost so much I'm afraid to touch it. Don't touch it. You know what? Let's just get out of here before something happens to it."
