I have a BC796D with the RS 800mhz ant. and it works perfectly
in the front seat of the car (no external set-up).

Years ago I used to use a handheld AOR8000 which was almost useless while driving without an external ant. set-up. Reception would be in and out.

How does the PRO96 work with the 800mhz ant while on the road.
Or would the upcoming PRO2096 base/mobile be better suited for mobile
reception use.

I wanted something smaller than the BC796D to carry in the car without using an outside ant.. The PRO2096 option would defeat the purpose of trying to go smaller for digital scanner.

Any recommendations.

Mine works great, performance though varies between systems. I just got an external 800 mobile with 3db of gain and a NMO mag-mount. I'll be taking it on the road for the first time with it on Sunday. So far it works just as good as the RS duckie inside the house.

I made a road trip from Massachusetts to Florida and back during the latter half of February. I used the 96 with a Larsen NMO-800 antenna. Performance was superb throughout the entire journey. If you're pressed for space within the cockpit it should work well for you. The V-scanners were a wonderful feature for such a long ride. I'm sure the 2096 would be better suite for a long term installation but the 96 was a winner on my trip.

I find the Pro-96 with the RS 800 MHz antenna a fine performer in the vehicle. It works a bit better if you can have it "see" throught the windows for far away signals. I have said this before in other threads, I have used all sorts of external antennas for 800 & 900 MHz receptions and the line losses involved between the antenna & radio are always beat out by the RS 800 MHz rubber duck attached directly to the radio.

I agree with loumaag, I just use the Radio Shack rubber antenna on mine sitting on the drivers side corner of my dash. I put it in the little cloth sack that my radio shack battery charger came with. It keeps it from getting scratched up and the dust etc. off of it.

I can be on the Highway and pick up towers as far as 25 to 30 miles away with that set up.
