Kinda dumb question, was this done on a grand piano? There’s a few other sounds going on as well.

Also, with regards to a real piano, what’s a good formula or rule of thumb for telling real from artificial piano ?

Sampled piano files played through keyboards are very good these days and for most people it would be very hard to tell the difference. With a really good recording and playback system someone in the know like a piano player might be able to tell by how the piano is played vs sustain, muting, etc. There can also be effects added to a real piano recording in production that makes it sound less real and hard to identify.

Doing a little research on the song, it looks like a major production at a well known recording studio and in my opinion the piano was probably a grand or baby grand. Synthesized keyboard piano is more typical in a home recording studio. A major artist who wants the sound of a real piano can afford to rent one. During live performances Spears uses a grand piano on stage.

Yeah this ones strange.

So can it concluded, then, that it wasn’t grand piano?
