I was wondering how long it takes most people to take the test for tech. The reason I ask is because I would like to take mine but they only give the test once a month on Saturdays at 815. I have to open my store at 930. I'm wondering if I would have enough time. I could probably get a Saturday off that coincides with the test but that probably won't happen until after the holiday season.

If you know the material the actual test should only take maybe 15 minutes. But there is paperwork to do and then your test has to be graded. I took my test in June. There were about 10 people there and we started late because they were waiting for stragglers. All said and done I was probably there for two hours or so. Not sure if that is typical or not.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; IEMobile 8.12; MSIEMobile6.0) Sprint T7380)

OK thanks for the info. I will probably just wait until after the holidays and it gets back to normal at the store.

I took mine in1995, walked in, took the tes,t and walked out in 15 minutes. Passed it also.

I studied for 3 weeks and took it.

The whole process for me took 45 minutes, from walking into the door, filling out paperwork, taking the tech test, waiting for the results, being talked into taking the general test, taking general, waiting for it to be graded, being giddy over passing both, and chewing the rag with them for a little while afterwards.

That being said, everyone's experience will probably be a little different. Are you sure there is only 1 testing site, 1 time a month?!? I find that hard to believe in Toledo. Check around, I'm sure you will be pleasently suprized to find other tests within a reasonable distance from your home and on different days.

Good luck on it when you do!

According to the ARRL site, there is only one test per month in the Toledo area. I'm going to call tommorow and check on that. If I can't make it Saturday, I could drive up to Ann Arbor or over to Sandusky to take the test. I haven't checked when they have their tests yet.

Google for ham clubs in your area. They might just have web sites. A lot of clubs put on tests, or at least can point you to someone who does.

Studied for 3 weeks took the tech and the general passed both then tried the extra no dice was alot harder than the tech or general. Will probably study rest of this year then take the extra next year.
mostly got in to it cause i loved the contesting that i did on field day. Field day is a great place to take youngsters to get them to see if it is something they want to do.

and yes you need atleast 2 hours they sometimes wait to get as many people as they can forms and anything else like if you decide to take more than one test

Our exam sessions seldom run over an hour. On rare occasion we'll have a dozen or so people and it might push us to 1.5 but I've never been there for 2 hours. I think our first person Fri was done in about 20-25 min. We try to get all of the forms and everything filled out ahead of time so we can start testing promptly at 7. If you pass and only miss a few questions it's very fast. All we have to do is sign a few forms, fill out your CSCE, and send you on your way. If you get finished after a couple of others, though, you'll have a wait and the duration will depend on how well (or poorly) they did.
