RadioShack 1Q Profit Plummets 85 Percent

By DAVID KOENIG, AP Business Writer Fri Apr 21, 4:56 PM ET

DALLAS - RadioShack Corp. said Friday its first-quarter profit plummeted 85 percent on disappointing sales of cellular phones and a write-down of the electronics retailer's assets and inventory. Its shares briefly sank to a 52-week low but rebounded later in the day.

Executives said they were disappointed in the results but will not alter the turnaround plan that they announced earlier this year, including closing hundreds of stores and replacing about one-fifth of the products on store shelves.

Not if they can't keep their stock up.

They have been doing everything they can to drive customers away from
their stores. Have you tried shopping in one recently?

Not sure what this new company plan is, but it sure looks like a bad move
on their part at this point.

If they would quit selling cell phones and stick with the other consumer electronics and parts, they should be able to stay above water. If they continue to attempt to 'push' cell phone sales, they will surely drown.

i work at a radio shack part time, it is a cool place to work. i do agree that radio has lost sight on its market. i think not they have lost out on a lot they will come back in a big way. oh and the cell phone sales are the main part that is keeping radio shack going. it is the biggest cell phone retailer in the country. -davis

Must be getting bad. Leno took a swipe at the "shack" last night. I believe that the word "clerks" was included in the monolog. Obviously others are taking note of the deficiences under the red sign.

I have been to 3 radio shacks here in Tucson and all but one the idiots behind the counter only knew about cell phones. None of them knew what a PRO-97 was or where I could find 10k ohm resistor. The one I went to where the guy knew something he was a ham radio operator and was very helpful.

Radio Shack Sales Associates are trained to sell. A few of them elect to learn more than just how to offer cellular phones.

Radio Shack slogan "you have a question...we have the answers" didn't help the situation.

This situation will continue as long as district and regional Sales Managers focus on "single" sells numbers within their domain and not returning customers. There's no data (as far as I know) that tells them customers are returning to their district or region.

Sales Associates aren't paid much more than basic hourly wages. In some situations less -- if they are categorized as Associate Managers (except hourly).

Perhaps this is why the Radio Shack web site is so very popular. No mess and no fuss with ignorant, lame, or depressing clerks. But, then ... what if you find that one Sales Associate who 'glows' with information. That's a real treat for the hobbiest.

I think they will be around a long time. I stopped in a RS store the other day and it looked totaly different then it did five months ago. We should evaluate RS after they are done closing and moving the 400 stores that are working in the red.

Radio Shack

i have to say, i liked it alot better before they started their cell phone buisness. i've dealt with the same store for 20 years but, anymore when i go in to buy some small item resistors, caps etc. i have to stand in line for 20 or 30 minutes. a couple times i just put the items back and left!

my feeling is that they lost focus on what made them popular, which was RADIO equipment and parts!! cell phone and calling plans are a dime a dozen. most sales reps know nothing about the products, just buy something!! I personally am done with radio shack and get all my equipment from a connecticut dealer which has excellent 1 day delivery service, extremely knowledgeable about radios, and most of all, honest and professional.

I have been lucky and found two good Radio Shack stores around my area. Most of the people that work there are pretty good. Most of them know what they are talking about. So hopefully they will get back to what they do best. That is electronics & RADIO equipment.

The owner and clerks at the Radio shack here on Bainbridge island Washington DO have a clue. While they didn't have any scanners on display they did know what a Radio shack Pro96 was and I had no problem ordering one. Infact there was another one on order that had arrived and they thought it was me that had placed the order.
I purchased the AC adaptor for my Pro96 the day I placed the order for it. And the owner took the time to show me how to put the plug in the right way. I didn't know she was the owner until I went back in there a few days later to purchase something else and asked about my radio. You've got questions? The Radio shack on Bainbridge island Washington has answers! They REALLY do!

I think most of the people here are referring to the company owned stores. The RS on Bainbridge Island is an authorized dealer, and it is locally owned.

Radio Shack Internet Site

The last five times I have been into Radio Shack, the clerk has looked up the item I was seeking on the internet...the same thing I could have done for myself. When asking for certain items, the clerk has to ask the manager where it is or what I was talking about.

I have discovered, though, that if the item is not in the store and you have the clerk look it up, have them order it for you and you won't have to pay for the shipping.

Not really a "Radio Shack" anymore.

While I can certainly agree that Rat Shack has lost it's concept of market, they have also lost any sense of what brought them to their household name - radio electronics. If I want a cell phone, I'll go to a cellular distributor. If I needed electronic parts, components, coax, antennas, and radios, I went to my local shack manager who had what I needed and some experience (He is both a scan head as well as a ham). With local ham dealers and electronics stores going the way of the dodo, maybe it's time to reclaim their roots and the market share that made them a household name. Frankly, when I need a couple of resistors, capacitors, or an npn, I really don't want to wait and deal with an internet dealer, delivery dates, and shipping costs. If its busted, get the parts and fix it right there and then.

Alot of you guys will be mad at the direction is currently headed. For the next 3 months, RS is focusing 100% on wireless! Not only that, but you will see alot of stuff going bye bye.
