How many systems in the United States have gone to P25 and then went digital? I know no one knows an EXACT number but just wondering from the people on here how many have you heard of? A few, A lot, Almost all, etc....? This is starting to worry me now because mostly everything I listen to has gone from analog to digital, with the majority going the last few months.

Thanks!

P25 is digital... Maybe you mean analog trunking to digital trunking. There have been numerous systems that have done this either through updating the previous system or going with a new system.

Very few..... I know in my area at least (none have totally went and there is a lot of digital TRS' here).

Many agencies/systems have gone to P25 and never gone encrypted. Really there can be analog encryption so its not a big deal going from analog to digital. The only real time you have to worry about analog to digital is with EDACS systems because EDACS digital (Pro Voice) isn't monitorable. There are two systems that I monitor (VA STARS and Petersburg) that are fairly new (Petersburg a little over a year) that are P25 systems (not just Mot Type II with P25 CAI) and neither one has any encryption. To be honest with all of my travels I have noticed few digital talkgroups being encrypted (some just part time) and even fewer systems being totally encrypted. Now there are some areas that are heavyly populated with EDACS systems that are ProVoice so they can't be monitored but looking in your area (if it is correct beside your user name) you have mostly Mot Type II systems, so you shouldn't have anything to worry about. That being said I cannot guarntee you that who you listen to will not make that decision to go encypto. Also to be noted is that encryption costs more $$$ so in the times we are in they may forgo the encryption ability, not to say it can't be added later.

A little more... Really if you look at the majority of systems that are either Mot Type II with P25 CAI, and P25 systems, most have few to no talkgroups that are encrypted. I would also say 99.9% are not totally encrypted.

Thanks for your reply. The reason why I was so curious was I saw a few months ago there was an ID "9520" (under the database section this ID was said to be Radio Maintenance) and it had "ENC" under it on my Uniden BCD396T. I read the manual and found this stood for "Encryption" and this made a horrible sound also. I appreciate your reply and it gave me a lot of hope but I'm just curious if I should still be worried due to that encryption ID. Thanks!

That would be the radio shop playing with their new toys. In houston we have a new 700MHz system that is P25, the only encrypted talkgroups on it are HIDTA and Narcotics task force which are both state and federal agencies. There are three counties that have police/fire on this system and none are encrypted.

Historically, encryption on Part 90 radio sold poorly because (a) it required expensive and difficult to maintain hardware add-ons and (b) because it required that the audio be digitized, it resulted in some significant range loss.

Given P25, however, one has already incurred the digital penalty, and encryption can be added on with a simple and cheap software upgrade.

As a consequence, I would expect the deployment rate of encryption to go way up.
