• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

So $2000-$2500 for OP config w/o either fdma or tdma trunking nor encryption?

Honestly $2k remains a little high, when comparing it to my quote for the radio without any features. Unless it has extended warranty, or original 3yr warranty. If it did have features it would be ok, otherwise not a good deal.

Basic features/common P25 start at $400USD+.

Warning:
If the radio was programmed with the full RPM (500USD per license, w/no subscription), you will not be able to program it with Conventional RPM (does not program trunking). Plus if the portable has the latest firmware and you don't have a Harris full version RPM subscription (400USD per yr) along with a license you will not be able to program.

Harris is like Motorola when it comes to software and updates. A real pain!

In case you are wondering, currently in the purchase process for a Unity.

Deciding between this and APX 7000 for future purchase. What would be a good price then for the Harris?

Deciding between this and APX 7000 for future purchase. What would be a good price then for the Harris?

1.) From experience and getting burned once, on a radio purchase. Stay away from Motorola UNTIL their press release states the future plans that they have for their LMR business.

2.) Prices vary quite a bit ($2K - $7K USD for either portables or mobiles w/features), who do you work for, who quotes prices/seller determines the prices you get.

3.) What LMR system do you currently use, or plan to use (Frequency Bands, P25 Conventional, P25 Trunking, P25 Phase II, etc.)?

4.) 99% of Motorola APX's are ALT (accelerated life testing), depo test radios, hacked, etc. I would suggest that you stay away from any of these, even if they claim to be "legit." APX's have too many variables that can be altered. If you use radios as life line communications, get something new!

Be aware I am NOT a dealer for any manufacturer, this is just from research and experience.

5.) If you have basic needs, there are better options out there then Motorola (APX 7K 2-bands) or Harris (Unity has 1, 2, 4 band variations).

6.) I have many suggestions, but need to know the basic requirements, use and budget limit.

7.) Each manufacturer has it's pros and cons. Believe me they are a headache, salesmen have a tendency to just sucker you into what will bring them the BIGGEST commission, or have their head stuck in the sand (don't know anything else).

If you don't need P25 Phase II (Trunking), then you have more options to choose from. By the way Phase II TDMA has two flavors, true P25 and Motorola's Phase II way.

If there is something that you would not/can't write in public, send me a private message.

Regards,

Unless you have a need for a Phase 2 P25 radio that does not register or affiliate I would not buy a Unity. If you are using the radio for Life Safety work, APX hands down. I have both. If you need all band wait till later this year when the APX8000 is available. It will be show in 2 weeks at IWCE. All band and size of a APX6000.

As far as the comment to stay away from Motorola, I would call that statement either reckless or uninformed. There is not a more stable long term radio company out there right now.

Warning...Watch out for 99% hacked/ALT APX's.

This is why you buy the seller, NOT the radio. On that note, I agree, I would not buy from ShillBay. You are more than likely going to get ripped of, end up with an ALT/Parts built/POS. The fully loaded flash code that has P25 trunking AND Q52&53 are a big clue you want to run away very fast. Too many dumbasses with Depot hacking flash codes when they have no clue what they are doing.

APX 8000 sounds nice, but we'll have to see the price. Probably not a realistic option

For the record, I use Unity radios (mobile and portable) for life safety and have nothing negative to say about them. I have also used the APX platform and have nothing negative to say about it either. My only comment about the Unity line is that on the mobile the touch screen control head doesnt belong in vehicle that must be operated by the driver due to a need to take your eyes off the road to changes systems/zones.

One thing that Harris made me do that Motorola has not required, was to register a specific computer and the software together with their servers.

Motorola, you buy the CPS and get updates and ability to load CPS onto several computers as needed. Harris required me to dedicate one computer to Harris radio programming. The MAC addresses on one particular computer were bound to my software. I had a hard drive failure of that initial computer and needed to go through a long drawn out process to once again get Harris's blessing to load their software onto the repaired computer.

As bad as dealing with Motorola has become, it is still easier to deal with than Harris. I am moving my radio buying over to Kenwood now.

Two things I do NOT like about the Unity are, it's not rated for 2 meters submersion (Liberty is), and it's only rated for waist/belt line drop against a hard surface. Other that it's a good radio.

Good to know I'm about to purchase TQS3385 RPM.

Yes, you generally purchase license packs and they are tied to the machine to prevent piracy. Moving them is pretty easy, just call TAC.
