I could not find any information in the manuals. I find it hard to believe that they would put eight custom slots there and not have a way to edit them.

You can change "Custom 1" (or any of the other Custom slots) to any of the other service types available in the scanner, (such as Law Dispatch, Law Tac etc.) but you can't assign a custom name of your own for a service type.

I expect you would only like to change the names “Custom 5” to whatever alpha-numeric you would like... NOT the titles of the numerous Service Types.

I tried and was successful changing “Custom 5” on my SDS200 to now read “2 Meters Ham Band” using the steps I gave you. I believe the BCD536HP and my SDS200 use the same menu structure for the most part.

I believe the OP is talking about the names of the "Service Types",

I have not as yet found instructions on how to change any of the
eight custom service slots

There are 8 custom "Service Types". Those custom service types, 1 through 8, can not be changed.

The instructions you gave him are for changing the names of the "Custom Searches". There are ten "Custom Search" names, 0 through 9, that can be changed.

You are correct in what I gave the OP. I figured he got mixed up with the terminology and wanted to change “Custom Search” names. If he was actually after the “Service Types” names, which are hard coded, I wonder why? His meaning is lost on me… any ideas?

Thanks Does not make sense, but ok.

If you mean "Can I change 'Custom 1' to something like 'Texas 91' ", no that cannot be done. It is a function of the database/firmware.

The scanner has an internal fixed list of Service Types, such as "Law Dispatch" which includes those "Custom X" ones. If users were allowed to change the Service Type in Sentinel, the operating system of the scanner will not recognize that user defined Service Type. As such channels with the user defined Service Type will not stop on them.

Since there is a notion of folks sharing/exporting Favorites Lists, if I send you a Favorites List because you are visiting my area, but I have user defined Service Types, which your scanner doesn't have in its firmware, there probably would be an issue.

Then there is the matter of spelling. If you misspell something because you are human, it might be very confusing down the road.

I did a fair amount of database programming in my younger years and have seen what happens when people are allowed to populate certain thing such as Street Name. You could have MAIN, main, Main, MAin and MAIn. While us humans know those five are the same, the scanner does not. They are different creatures.

So there is a method to the madness.

Incorrect. All the Custom search slots are editable. (Custom 1, 2, etc). It’s the “Service Types” (Fire Dispatch, Fire Tac, etc.) that you can NOT change.

But then you go on to describe why you can’t and I see nothing wrong with that… as long as we are talking about Service Types.

“how to change custom service slot?”

First of all, “custom service” is incorrect. It’s either “custom search” or “service type”. The former can be edited, the latter con not.

The OP used the term "Service" rather than "Search" so that's what I was keying on and referring to. I was not talking about custom searching.

There are so many terms that are confusing to the new user and the context means everything.
