How to connect to rdio-scanner server outside of your home network?

I've got rdio-scanner setup and working great. I can connect to it from the pc that runs it and from my phone as long as I'm connected to same network that the pc is on. As soon as the phone connects via cellular data I lose connetion. I've got an exception in my router for the ip and port that the program uses. I also have a no-ip account setup to redirect to it from a dynamic link. Any suggestions?

If you have your router's inbound nat setup correctly, you need to put the no-ip name for the server url in the rdio app settings.

I finally sorted it out. I already the port setup in the nat. I added inbound and outbound port rules into the window firewall. The program already had a firewall exception. Then I rebooted. It works great now.

If the server is already open and streaming to the VPN whats the point of the VPN?
1. I made the first mention of a VPN in this thread. If you already had a VPN running on your setup, I was not aware of it. You simply mentioned 'an exception in my router for the ip and port that the program uses.'

2. A VPN makes your device appear to be on the network, and offers a significantly line of defense to your home hardware than just opening a port. An open port can be probed & frequently exploited, meaning your network might as well be open. Programs that listen to ports need to be constantly updated and secured, exploits fixed, and continued to be upkept with the evolving cybersecurity scene. Devices with IOT functionality & products where interent availability & access is a decidedly secondary use don't have the same amount of forethought put into protecting the internet facing components. Networking & firewall stacks are obsolete before they hit the market, they are not / cannot be updated, etc.

VPNs are designed to protect the users & assets, and can be updated / configured in ways beyond what a port forwarded device can do.

You can research all over the internets about how VPNs are more secure than simply opening a port on your homejobber router. It's the smarter + safer thing to do.

If you don't want to open your home router ports, you can use a VPN, you can go even more simple.
Tailscale Tailscale
Install it on your Rido machine, install it on your phone.
creates a mini-mesh VPN network between the two.
OR CloudFlare tunnels, depends on how nerdy you want to be.

You can do that easily and for free using ProScan's RadioFeed Source Client and Web Server Audio Streamer!

What is better than VPN and Tailscale (depending on your needs) is Cloudflare tunnels. It allows you to securely push your application to the internet without exposing your network.

I use Tailscale without issues. I used to long back use ZeroTier but moved everything to Tailscale, just seems to work better.
I have a few RoIP sessions over TS running.

I’ve got a surveillance program (BlueIris) running on ZeroTier. If proscan is running on a similar server I’d think it work. Thanks for your response!
