By listening to what the users are saying.

Deductive reasoning. Listen to names, places, etc. It should be easy to differentiate between the PD, FD, and EMS. The PD will chase people. The FD will fight fires. EMS will save people.

Find the TGs by using the SEARCH mode on your scanner. For Uniden, this will be ID SEARCH. GRE calls it OPEN MODE.

As for what city, LISTEN to the NAMES of the streets or locations. If you're familiar with the city, you should be able to localize where they are. For knowing which is dispatch 1, 2, or 3, you will jsut have to listen more. Many times they will say 'go to tac'. When you hear the same people on a different TG immediately after that, that's very likely 'tac'. When they say 'Unit 28 to unit 33 on Dispatch 2', that's dispatch 2.

If you don't have or want to develop the deductive reasoning skills, wait for someone to post the info to the database here. 8)

To answer your question, no, there is no software that will tell you who the user is for any particular channel or talkgroup.

Many public safety trunked systems are listed on this web site, and already have much, if not all of that information. If not, then like someone else already mentioned, you're stuck with deductive reasoning and trying to figure it out for yourself.

Some people think that's part of the fun. Some like scanning MilAir, others RR, some ham, many PS, and some enjoy trying to figure out who is who.

I believe that it is part of the fun also, though I admit the wording of my response might have seemed to indicate otherwise.

Also, some tend to forget that a simple notepad and pen/pencil are very
important tools to have at the ready in one's listening post. I can fill one up with notes in no time at all.

If you can't find the info posted, then you are going to have to work for it. Like the others said, pen and paper will be your friend. Start by just doing a search of the talkgroups and writing the talk group number down along with what type of traffic was on it. (Police, fire, ems, buses, etc)

Next, when that talk group pops up again, you already have an idea of what agency may be on it and you can concentrate on street names and locale's. For example, Mobile PD has a preceinct map on their web site and by listening to street names and locations, I was able to determind which talk group was used in what preceinct.

It can be a needle in a haystack but many times, they will call another unit and they will identify what talkgroup they are talking on. Ex - "405 to 310 on North Civil". Being I knew this was the sheriff dept. using this sytem, the user identified the channel for me.

It's going to take time but note taking is a must. I'd be willing to say 99.9% of all of the info in the database is from people listening and taking notes.

Well, I would say 98-99%, but you have the right idea. :D
