It us in the Control Panel under System.

OR

Copy these next three lines into WordPad or NotePad:

set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
cd %SystemRoot%\System32
start devmgmt.msc

Save the file with any name you want with the extension .bat
Example: chopliver.bat

Once you save it, locate the file then right click on the file and select Run As Administrator and that will take you straight to the Device Manager

Easiest way is to to click Start, Run, and type devmgmt.msc (provided the user has the Run command in the list.)

In WIN 7:

Control Panel>System and Security>System>Device Manager

In Vista:

Control Panel>System and Maintenance>Device Manager

Excellent, guys. Now for the 64 dollar question (OK it's a bad pun, so sue me) - do the instructions change for Vista 64 bit? There are a few folks using that, and it's proven to be something of a headache since it seems not all Vista USB drivers are compatible with 64 bit....73 Mike

Is this a Vista trick, or does it also work in Win7, Scott? Thanks Mike

Thanks guys. I'll see about getting all this into the wiki in the next day or so. It's going to be more important now with Santa delivering all those new scanners, hi

In Vista and Win7, how does one get to the Device Manager when they want to diagnose a USB connection issue?
I reckon the easiest way is the same as it is in most ALL windows OS's

Try pressing WINDOWS key+ the PAUSE key and it should come up :)

Good luck!

For Win7

Right click on Computer (or My Computer), and select properties, from the control panel that opens select 'device manager.'

Yup, it's that easy, and as I recall, similar in Vista too.

This is much easier than all that messy typing. lol

DAYUM!! i didnt know about that one! TY!!

There's a whole bunch of Windows-key shortcuts. The ones I can recall off the top of my head...

Windows+R - brings up the "Run" dialog (i.e. Start>Run).
Windows+E - starts Windows Explorer.
Windows+D - same as clicking the "show desktop" icon (minimizes all windows); doing it again at that point brings all the windows back.
Windows+L - locks the system (same as Start>Shut down>Lock).
Windows+M - Minimizes all windows (same as Windows+D but doesn't come "back" when you hit it again)
Windows+F - Opens the search ("Find") dialog.

On my computer running Vista, that brings up the Task Manager, not the Device Manager. Maybe the Canadian version is different!

From that window, click Device Manager. Or, hardware tab if you have are using the classic look.

Hmmm, now I noticed you said "Task Manager" wtf? That is strange indeed.
