To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

My "go to" for making repeaters with Motorola radios is MRE1032 on eBay. Looking at his store though, I do not see anything for APX series handheld radios. I usually use CDM or XPR series mobiles, and have only made HT series handhelds into portable repeaters. But, it may be a start to search there. (This assumes that by "handy radios APX" you mean Motorola APX series radios.)

The cost of 2 APX radios, even the low end ones would definitely cover a good second hand repeater.

If you’re planning on using analog look at something like PowerWorx and crossband if you can. It’s also possible to use a pyramid vehicular repeater and buy a cheap flat pack duplexers and have a better setup than using 2 portable radios.

There is also some portable radios that are capable of cross band repeat if you absolutely have to use a handheld radio due to size or something.

I suspect you’re going to encounter heat issues if you plan to use 2 portables more than a few seconds at a time. Not saying it can’t be done but the performance you get out of this might not be so hot compared to cross (in) banding from a mobile.

OP can you explain what you are really trying to do. There are APX portable based repeaters but they are not cheap. Knowing what your actual plan is would help with your request.

Thanks for your message. Yes, I mean Motorola APX series radios as well as APX7000, or SRX2200.

Hi Weeks ago I had opportinty to test this kind of repeater. SRX2200 connected back_to_back to SRX2200. it makes a very light-weitgh repeater with a mini size TETRA duplexer.
It worked fine during the time the battery of the TX radio had energy.
I would like to duplicate such repeater.
Unfortunalty I hadn't the opportunity to check the cable.
Also this kind of repeater is full ASTRO modulation, not analog.
Cheers

Hi,
I just want to make a back to back repeater with 2 radios like SRX2000 or APX7000. Those radios can be connected back-to-bakc without any extra interface, just a cable. I'm looking for info about this cable.
OK.?

Are you swimming in APX portable radios and what is your goal? As an example, do you plan to use analog or P25?

As far as I am aware nobody is doing what you are attempting to do. You’re in good company so if it can be done someone on RR definitely knows how to do it, but myself and many others either work in emergency management or as system administrators who use APX radios daily. If this can be done - although I have not see it happen - theoretically it “could” be done. The problem is costs and in my world we would not rely on a repeater made from two portable radios.

In the past I’ve seen some cables being sold on eBay coming from China to make “repeaters” out of XTS 5000 radios but I have never seen anything similar for the APX. If you can justify the costs of 2 APX series portables you can either afford a proper repeater or a DVRS. Even the very complicated interoperability boxes (roughly $30,000 to $50,000) use mobiles.

Do you plan to use VHF, UHF, or 7/800 MHz? Will you be linking to another repeater? Conventional or trunked?

The eBay link is just to get you to the seller MRE Direct. Send him a message and he will tell you if your project is possible or not. Just browsing his store and other places online I’m not finding anything.
