Hello all!

I have a TRAM 1411 wideband discone that I received as a gift almost three years ago that I have yet to actually install. Now that I am ready to install it, I need some guidance on how to best secure it to my roof. An internet search has been not as helpful as I would have expected.

Let me know if you need any more info.

Thanks!

Every situation is different. What kinda surface are you going to be mounting to? On the actual top of the roof? On an eve? We need lots more information. A tripod on the ridge line works if you have a ridge line.

An eave-mount is possible but not preferred. I am hoping to mount it directly to the surface of the roof, right above the stud wall where my desk is, it is a standard shingle roof with the typical plywood and rafters, as far as ridge mounting goes.... the building is barn style and thus has a shallow ridge.. I want a solution that can withstand storms as well.

I mounted my Diamond discone on the side of my house using two 18" set-off brackets to clear my roof overhang. I used a 10’ section of steel conduit as the mast. Works great and has survived 50+ mph winds. I did not want to drill holes in my roof, so this was my best alternative.

One of the simplest ways is a vent pipe mount that will clamp a short mast to a vent pipe. I usually use two of these mounts, one right above the other and no more than a 5 to 6ft mast. A 2" diameter DirecTV "J" mount is another cheap and easy method and this mount can adjust for roof angles.

Isn't that a risk using vent pipes that wind load can gradually work it loose and cause a small roof leak?

No. Vent pipes are strapped to the rafters where they exit the roof and I've seen huge antennas mounted to them that have lasted 30+ years with no guys. I've stuck 20ft push up masts down in steel vent pipes for temporary installs and they were really stable. If the vent were to move some the flashing will move a little to follow it.
