Seems I saw a thread recently about an issue similar to this, but couldn't find it, so...

I installed a Diamond discone in the attic a couple weeks ago and the HP-1 has been receiving quite nicely, from across town in fact, which is a good 30 miles. Until recently, that is. I noticed this by comparing it with the new scanner Santa delivered. What I've discovered by the few things I've tried is that when any Service, Department, or Channel is put on Hold the unit receives just fine. It's in lock-step with the new scanner. But when Hold is disabled, reception is terrible, only detecting the stronger signals, occasionally, or picking up right at the end of a transmission. Rarely does it receive anything from across town now.

I found this, but not sure it applies as I don't believe I'm that close to any transmitters. How close is too close?

Here's what I know and have done so far:
- Experienced the recent HPDB update glitch and removed/reinstalled Sentinel/HPDB
- Recently connected discone but reverted back to stock and no difference
- Ran scandisk/checkdisk/defragged SD card and no problems found
- Cleared user data and recreated/installed new Fave (as a test) identical to scanner #2
- When Service, Department, and Channel are set to Hold, reception is normal
- When Service, Department, and Channel are not set to Hold, reception is abby normal
- Above two are true whether using Full DB or the single Fave currently installed
- Scanner #2 is using an outdoors RS scanner antenna but reception on the HP-1 appears to be the same using the stock antenna
- All Service Types are enabled
- Location Control not used

I have a couple things left to try but thought it would be good to have more eyes on it.

Thanks

I have no idea which system you are trying to monitor but
If you are not using location control and are trying to receive a Multi-site system
make sure you avoid (they will turn red) the sites farthest from you that you can't pick up.

Paring down the sites/channels appears to have helped. In general, the HP-1 seems to be happier this way.

In this particular instance, I'm monitoring the following systems (Denver area), two of which are multi-site. I wish there were a comprehensive list of depts to sites available for the State of Colorado DTRS. With the exception of the sites you know are further out (of the metro area), there's no real way to know what you're getting when you select them due to overlapping coverage. And if you miss one..... Maybe there's a reason for this and I'm just not aware of it. I have much to learn. It would be nice to have, though.

Service - State of Colorado DTRS (P25 - 198 total Sites)
Department - Jefferson County
Channel - Jefferson County SO (or whatever's listed under the dept)

Service - Lakewood/Wheat Ridge/West Metro Fire (EDACS - 2 Sites)
Department - Can be Lakewood PD or Fire, or Wheat Ridge PD or FD, etc...
Channel - Can be anything here under the above depts

Service - Lakewood/Wheat Ridge/West Metro Fire - P25 (1 Site)
Department - Lakewood PD
Channel - Lakewood PD - West Sector Dispatch Ch-3 (or whatever's listed under the dept)

Thanks

Hp1 start with blank favorite List idea

Are you sure you dont have the attenuator on?
Mine was defaulted ON ,guess what?I went to the weather channels and I'm like "what is this thing a friggin toy?" It wasnt getting weather very well.So I turned the Attenuator off ,now it works just as good as my other scanner. (996XT).
Its a pretty cool scanner if you add the towns and things you want to listen to one at a time using the full database is just confusing.I entered everything one at a time by hitting :
(begin here)
Menu
Manage Favorite lists
Create New list
Review edit channels
addchannel
USA
My state
then county
county systems
touching what i wanted on.
hit accept .

END
Start over for each thing you want.

This is tedious but starting with a blank favorite list I was able to get everything
I wanted exactly the way I wanted it without worthless talkgroups or services.
The attenuator is OFF and its great.

So is something fishy its inside the scanners.digital is one or zero.yes or no.
I still feel theres a third state and thats the state of confusion.

Funny!

Attenuator = Off

I'll give it a shot and see what happens.

Thanks
