Have not been on here for awhile but have read the reviews on the hp-1 bad sensitivity and am considering the hp-2 but have a bcd396xt and need at least equal since I am in a somewhat remote location...any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I've got both hp1 and hp2 radios. I concentrate on 700-900 mz in my listening. I run them regularly on fringe systems that people much closer to me to those systems cannot receive.

I also have a couple 396xt radios. I would say that the hp radios are probably more sensitive and can pull in more stuff in the 700-900 mz range than the 396xt radios, though I can still receive the same systems.

I think they are also just as sensitive using the same antennas on other parts of the spectrum down to 140mz range. Below that I don't listen much because I don't have any antennas for that range.

I don't have any experience with the HP-2 but my HP-1 is pretty deaf, it's true. My old Pro-96 far outperforms the HP-1 in sensitivity on all bands. I'm going to put my Pro-96 up for sale either here or if it doesn't sell, then on ebay, BTW.

My HP1 is also pretty deaf in the VHF and UHF and UHF-T bands but does a better job in 700-900Mhz.

The sensitivity was improved on all bands somewhat when the 455Khz filter was changed to a narrow band filter.

The stock antenna with the HP1 stinks compared to others like Diamond and Comet antennas.

HP 1 vs. HP-2

I had a HP1 which was ok as compared to my previous GRE-500

now a 2 in mobile using a Laird low profile UHF-VHF antenna and it works well on P25 VHF 40 miles (Ontario Oregon) Malhure county Oregon and UHF 35 miles -,Payette County

The first thing you should do with the hp1 or hp2 is remove the antenna and put it somewhere you can find it if you want to do all band scanning, which I never do.

If you will be scanning 700-900 Mz systems, both HP radios excel using a radio shack 800mz antenna or a Laird Technologies 806 portable antenna. The use of a low profile (2 inches high) 800 Mz Laird with separate Motorola mag mount will pull in systems up to 60 miles mobile.

There are comparable antennas for 300-500 mz and also for VHS high 135-176 mz. Using the right sntenns has a large bearing on the "deafness" of the radio.

To the extent that I can find anything in that range to listen to, they do ok. About the only things I have there are legacy state police frequencies. That is with the stock antenna. I usually use a 700-900mz antenna and reception on 39-42mz is not as good.

The stock antenna that comes with HP1 is horrible!!! A wet noodle receives better!

To be fair, the stock antenna works OK on 700-900Mhz, but on all other bands, it's really bad.

I bought a right angle SMA adapter and a Comet SMA503 and it was like I had a completely different scanner that could actually hear 155-520mhz, and the 700-900 works even better too.

When I buy Uniden portables, I just assume I'll have to buy a better antenna. I go into my purchase knowing this, so I'm ok with it.

That's true of any scanner. They all include a highly compromised all-band antenna not really good on any band.

Always replace with a band specific antenna.

The HP-2 I just got is doing a little better than the GRE800 in the 700 MHz range sensitivity wise. A little more solid APCO25 decoding.
At work I'm below six 950 MHz grid dish transmit antennas running around 400 watts each..
I have to play with the HP-2 antenna a bit to keep it from overloading on the 700 MHz stuff. A Bearcat BC996XT with a disconce antenna on the same roof only 20 feet away from the 950 MHz antennas has no problems. My GRECOM also seems to be a little less prone to overloading.
