These 3 options are typically highest likelihood:

1) Faulty USB cable.
2) Faulty USB port on the PC.
3) Faulty USB port on the scanner.

Paul, I rebooted my computer, started up Sentinel, turned on my scanner, plugged the USB into the computer, then plugged the USB into the scanner. The only message I ever see is whether to charge or not. It never asks me if I want to go to mass storage mode.

I believe you need to press the power button to turn on the scanner; that is when it will ask for Mass Storage vs Serial.

I believe I figured it out. I plugged the HP-2 into a different USB port on my laptop and it recognized right away. I was able to read from the SD card and could then view my user information in Sentinel. Very nice! The USB port I was previously trying this with is a high current port. I believe the HP-2 was interpreting that as a charging port, not a communicating port.

For the record, I was surprised at first how long you have to hold down the power button before the HP-2 will turn on. For a while I thought the unit was defective. I held the button down as long as I thought was reasonable and all I saw was the screen flash for a second, and then nothing. You really have to hold the button down much longer than you'd think at first. Now that I know you have to wait for the beep, I have it figured out.
