I wouldn't have bought the HP-1 if I didn't already know (or at least suspect) that it could be friendly to the power-user who always tries to get the last ounce of performance out of anything he owns. I've been doing electronic projects and been into GPS and navigation software since almost the infancy of the industry.
The HP-1 is the first scanner I've owned since the 90's when my local police/fire all went to a trunked system and trunking scanners were out of my league both in price and complexity. The HP-1 is a good balance of user-friendliness along with its ability to be modified to suit the individual's taste using 3rd party software etc.
If you're not into cutting up cables, use the Garmin GPS-18x with its DB-9 serial connector and cigar-lighter plug. Apply a gender changer and null-modem adapters between the HP-1 serial cable (purchased separately) and the GPS DB-9 connector and it'll just work perfectly.
Although my eyesight isn't what it once was as I age, I can still solder when I have to. I value the $$$ more than my time in deciding to re-use an old GPS puck I hadn't used in years so I didn't go out and purchase a new one.
Power-users are the minority apparently when you look at the target market Uniden is aiming at. I would bet I'll be answering a lot of questions. Hope I can keep my answers civil for those really 'dumb' questions.
There's no such thing as a stupid question; only stupid people ;^)
