I charge a second set of batteries externally as my cord is bad. when i change the batteries and power on, i get the sd card error, and when I plug it into computer, i'm forced to re format the card. any ideas what would cause this?

If you have Replay or recording turned on, the scanner is saving audio data to the card every time it breaks squelch. Cards have a finite number of write cycles before they wear out, and when thousands of files are written to the card every day, it can wear them out quickly. More expensive cards are rated for more write cycles before failure.

It's also possible that you are corrupting the card by not shutting the scanner down before removing batteries. Killing power in the middle of a write can also corrupt the card, and should be avoided.

I'm going to try accessing the menu before powering off, as I do have replay set at 30 sec, and don't see away to disable it. . I figure the menu will stop audio writing to the card... Thanks

There's a menu setting to change Replay duration to 0 seconds, which turns it off.
