Just bought an Uniden Ext speaker for my HP 2. When you plug into scanner the volumne drops dramatically. Any reason for this? Do you have to change any radio settings or something.

Did you use an amplified speaker? The headphone output cannot drive a speaker directly. Needs to be an amplified speaker.

Get a set of cheap pc speakers that are usb powered makes the hp2 sound great, and they can be powered easily in car or home.

Why? Because the headphone output is current limited so you do not blow out your ears using a headset, ear buds, ect.

So you will need a amplifier with at least a 32 ohm input impedance, resistance, to not load down the Earphone output.

Well, in part that, but mainly that the earphone output only puts out very low wattage (sorry I don't know the number offhand, but likely around 250 mW).

In other words it is a headphone jack, and not an external speaker jack.

It is only an external speaker jack in that it provides an audio source that can be externally amplified.

Unless there is a stepdown adapter involved, I am always a little nervous about plugging stuff into 110v.

A cheap set of USB powered speakers is $13 at Amazon and they sound great. Have 2 sets. Search Amazon Basics

I use the Amazon basics speakers with great results. Just a heads up they do not come with a wallplug however most USB cubes like you get with an iPhone work with no issue. Make sure however that you use a good adapter and not one of the cheap $.99 ones as they will create a ton of noise and bring a new problem to the mix.

Went to Best Buy found a cheap set of Insigna pc speakers powered from outlet. It's working great for $ 15. It's a good day.

One would guess that UPMan knows nothing about the earphone jack, even tho it WAS explained.

" headphone output is current limited so you do not blow out your ears using a headset, ear buds, ect "

And I will add that the ear phone jack being current limited it can not drive a speaker.
