An antenna as close as possible to a window facing where the transmitters are that you try to receive. Maybe a mag foot with a good mobile 3-band antenna that you could move around to find the best spot in the room. Some suggests a Larsen 3-band to be among the best but there are many other to choose from.

Well since Ubbe cannot advise of any antenna other than telling the OP to place the antenna close to a window....duh. ANYWAYS- I will recommend and antenna since I have many outside as I do inside. My opinion for an inside antenna for the HP2 would be the Diamond SRH789. You can adjust the length for optimum reception in a particular band. Just make sure you get the one that is SMA. It works pretty good however a few haphazard people have complained of its "flimsiness". I have no probs with mine.

Indoor antennas are always a compromise, as you probably know. Getting one antenna to cover three frequency ranges is also a compromise.

As Ubbe mentioned, the tri-band antenna from Larsen is probably your best bet. Pick the mounting method of your choice, but it does need a ground plane.

LongWire's suggestion of a telescoping whip is probably going to disappoint you on at least one band. (That will depend on a number of factors.)

If someone near you can loan you something, it would give you an idea of any improvements that might happen.

Pick up one of the "blade" or "leaf" type VHF/UHF TV antennas sold in WalMart and nearly every home / hardware store as "HDTV" antennas. TV antennas are broad enough... as is your scanner's antenna matching... to handle public service scanning bands quite well. Place it high in the highest window you have access to on the side of the building toward where most of what you want to receive comes from. You'll need an adapter to go from the male "F" connector on the antenna cable to your scanner. You may need to rotate the blade / leaf antenna on its axis to change the polarity from horizontal to vertical. However, many of these types of antennas are circularly polarized so it may not matter that much. Try different positions while you listen to the weakest signals you want to receive. Or use the National Weather Service NOAA VHF broadcasts to adjust for the best signal (assuming the NOAA tower is in the same direction as what you want to hear). These HDTV antennas... in a window toward what you want to hear... are going to work better than any omnidirectional telescoping whip or "rubber duck" on your HP2.

Yes indoor antennas are a compromise. Person was asking about an indoor antenna and I gave him an excellent source of an antenna. Mag mounts are basically an outdoor antenna. Larson are good-not knocking them but I answered from experience. I have one as well as HP2. That is giving advice from having/using them. Take heed Ubbe.
