Ubbe, I just looked at all the files from a SDS200 and 536HP SD Card and there are no HPE files at all on the cards. Everything is HPD file extensions and are all human readable from what I could see.
You are correct. The hpd files are the actual datafiles that the scanner uses and hpe are the export files that Sentinel creates from a whole favorite list.

Uniden selected to use plain readable text in their datafiles that makes them easy to work with. You can import the files in excel or the free OpenOffice calc program and edit or use any text editor to quickly change something. The excel edit needs to use the tabulator delimiter import. If you have name tags like Car 4550 Car 4750 and so on and would like to change several hundreds of them to Patrol 4550 and Patrol 4750 you can use find&replace and highlight which column it should use for the change.
