To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:
Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.
If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.
To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.
The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.
For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

HT1000 - RVN4098 - Software for the HT/JT1000/Visar - DOS Based, need win95/98 with pure DOS recommended.
MT2000 - RVN4097 - Software for the MT2000/MTX8000/MTX9000/MTS2000 - DOS Based, same as above
HT1250 - HVN9025 - Software for the HT750/1250/1550 CDM750/1250/1550 EX500/600 - Windows based, 95/98/2000/XP, not sure about Vista.
Don't know any of the ribless cables.

I've bought a few of the ribless cables from kawamall on ebay, they have worked fine on both HT1000 and MT2000.... as you will have seen the older rss requires very old systems, I haven't tried anything faster than 166mhz so far. You can download MSDOS 7.10 (it's in the public domain now) from several places on the net, and I've found that a good (OLD) laptop is the best platform. I obtain some comfort level in knowing I have a built-in battery independent of UPS or commercial power when programming the radios.

You don't have to use a computer that is that slow. I am using a Toshiba Laptop with a Pentium 3 processor in it and running window 98se. I can program a ht1000 just fine on it. I also use the laptop to program my spectra mobiles and my mts2000 portables. I have no problem programming a MSF5000 i have.

I picked up a 386 laptop off of ebay for $0.99 and 12.00 shipping. I use it for the rss.
I've tried P3 and they would not work. Really depends on speed of the cpu.

I've been using a P4 2.13ghz laptop that I boot into FreeDOS to program my HT1000 with no issues.

Hmm... Ok, well maybe this weekend I'll get some brass and give a much faster machine a go. I can't afford to brick any of my radios but it sure would be nice to stop maintaining these old machines. I have to admit though, it was fun restoring a few of the old laptops 
I ended up installing a dual boot msdos and debian linux on some of the 166mhz machines. For the thrill of seeing a modern unix kernel run on a 166mhz POS of course!

Is the HT1000 programmable with the same RSS and cable as the MT2000?

The same cable will work, but not the same RSS.
The RSS for HT1000 is called "ht1000" and the RSS for MT2000 is "mtsx"

I have run the HT1000 RSS on two PIII 800MHz with no issues. Same with the latest Saber, Maxtrac, Maratrac, and MTSX RSS's. I did use real dos mode, (either a 98SE bootdisk, or the reboot to DOS mode from 98SEoption.)

The absolute only legal way is to purchase it directly from Motorola and no where else (and pay whatever they charge), unfortunately.

Ah, right, which would then mean there's no way to legally obtain it anymore.

I recently had trouble writing an MT2000 with a P-II CPU, I would get "Radio Ack failed" or something like that. It was just too fast for the MT's controller. So, I pulled out the restored 286-16 4MB RAM with DOS 6.22 on it. It took a while for it to validate the codeplug and start the write process. But it worked! SO, SAVE those old machines!
I can program your HT1000 and do the alignment here in L A.
