To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I'm a Police Officer and my service is using the MTS2000 flashport portables which are around 10-15 yrs old.

I am looking at buying my own portable and I was wondering if anyone can give me some advise with regards to the HT750. Is it a better radio and how does it compare with the MTS2000?

Thanks!

In all honesty, the HT750 is a downgrade... I think they feel cheap, and I dont think I'd trust it in a public safety setting. If I were you, I'd take a look at an XTS2500. Smaller size than the XTS5000, built better, and your MTS2000 accessories (speaker mics, etc not batteries though) will work with it.

I've had both, but I prefer the MTS. I have lots of UHF Jedi's, but bought a 750 last year just to try it out. The rx didn't seem as sensitive, so I sold it. I just prefer the Jedi as it seems more rugged. I had a 9250 which is also a Waris [cousin to the 750] & it worked great, but after a year or 2, I sold it for a 900 MTS2000. The 9250 did have a battery meter on the screen, but I just preferred the Jedi. We've all seen cops carry a MTS2000, but has anyone seen a cop with a 750? GARY N4KVE

ht750

i'm a volunteer and have a ht1250 and its not a cheap radio.question for him do you have tons of money to own a xts radio.a lot of police and fire in cleveland use ht750s everyday with out trouble.another question will the old radios do narrowband? the xts is a great radio if you have the money to own one i'm not saying the xts is bad but maybe the police officer might not have that kind of money i sure dont.

We have a bunch of 750's and 1250's in service in law enforcement and fire use in our county. They seem to do just as good as the old Jedi 1000's. One thing we have found out is that if the battery is getting weak or old, TX power goes downhill.

What? You're saying the HT750 is Chinese (with a hint of "cheap") when Motorola makes all three said radios?

Motorola makes radios in many countries all over the world. Heck, I have a Maxtrac made in Israel. While the Waris series is made in an Oriental country, the MTS 2000's were made right down the street in Plantation Fl, & some were made in Schaumberg Il. I have 2 MTX838's that were made in Malaysia, & are every bit as good as the MTS2000's made here, however I believe what Will was referring to was that the 750's just feel cheaper than the 2000's. The quality doesn't feel the same. I believe in their day the MTS 2000 was a top tier radio, while the 750 was a mid tier radio. Like comparing a XTS5000 to a XTS2500. I'm not knocking the 750, but the 2000 is just a better radio. GARY N4KVE

Ht750

There is nothing wrong with the HT750's, I have had them all HT750/1250/1550 and they are good radios. The HT750 would be a big step down ,you may want an HT1250. With that being said I do love my XTS's.

I have a 1250 now w/ my Vol F/D and HATE IT!! ...Audio is so much better W/ the Jedi series radios.I also have the xts5000's w/ my paid F/D...They are very nice but the audio is touchy.I am sticking w/ mt2000.IMO
Only slight downfall to the mt's are the weight .......they are a bit heavier than the 750's and 1250's.

While many public safety entities use the HT750/1250 line and are pleased with them, you have to remember that the series was designed to be a business/commercial radio. The MTS2000 on the other hand, was designed with public safety in mind.

Will either suit your needs? of course.. but my preference in a public safety environment would be to go with a radio designed for the needs of public safety.

I guess the same could be said of TRBO/NXDN as well.

I would keep the MTS2000. The radio is a real classic and a proven winner as far as durability, RX / TX, ease of use, etc. The only downside is its size and weight. But if its attached to your duty belt, it shouldn't make much of a difference. The HT750 is a decent radio but doesnt have a channel display like the MTS2000 does.

My question is why are you going away from the MTS2000, is it because it won't be narrow band compliant?
Then the Pro series is a suitable replacement. I would go with the HT-1250, instead of the 750, unless you have the money for the XTS series radios. Do you really need an XTS, well that depends, if you are on a Type II trunking system, then yes you will, but if it's just plain old analog simplex and or repeat, then the HT-1250 will do just fine. My local PD has had the HT-1250LS since 2002, and they work great.

The MTS2000 is narrowband compliant with current firmware.
