Humboldt County SO and Eureka PD are once again thinking about consolidating their dispatch services.
Eureka, county officials to consider merging police, fire dispatch - Times-Standard Online The only fire dispatching would be Humboldt Bay Fire Authority, as Fortuna PD dispatches their FD, and CALFIRE handles everyone else in the county, including 30+ VFDs that have radios.
They've gone through this routine in the past, but the most recent serious talks in 1995 tried to include the smaller Arcata, Fortuna, and possibly Humboldt State University PDs, for whom it wasn't feasible (they would have had to close their stations nights and weekends). The idea ran out of steam after the County spent over $50,000 on two consulting outfits to study it.
Maybe things are different now - Shascom (Anderson PD) and Nevada County (Grass Valley/Nevada City PDs) are trying it.
