First of all, thanks to all that have posted the great hurricane info on the site. I've been looking at some of the web pages and there is a lot of great info. I was wondering, however, if anyone has logged any hurricane hunter aircraft on any of their missions in the past couple of days. I see there are many frequencies allocated to the Hunterrs, but i was just wondering if anyone has confirmed any traffic on them recently and which ones are active.

For the most part, HH aircraft are satellite linked, and they only use HF when the link is down or they need a specific patch. In the past, they have used the MARS freq of 13927 USB, and they have also been known to occasionally use the HF-GCS system. I also wouldn't ignore the MWARA CAR family of frequencies.

Most of the freqs you find that are attributed to the Hunters are old and very outdated; the antennas and transmitters were wrecked when Andrew devastated Holmstead AFB several years ago.

I haven't seen much on the Worldwide Ute News server yet, but I have no doubt there are lots of folks looking for them. See the thread for the Coast Guard Hurricane information for links to lists of freqs.

Milsat Freq's...

So if the Hurricane Hunter planes are using milsat comms, what are the milsat frequencies and can they be monitored, are they analog or digital...
I remember many years ago when they used to be on HF and it was a lot of fun listening to them.....

Thanks.

Unfortumately you can't monitor milsat the major reason being it's all encrypted. Othre problems include knowing what bird they are using and where it is, uplink and downlink etc. The system operates in the UHF spectrum modulated in FM and digital.

Quote "For portable military satellite monitoring I use an Uniden BC 250D handheld programmed with all the FLEET-SATCOM, LEASAT and UFO Satellite downlink frequencies. Attached to the BC 250D you'll see a 5 element Yagi. This antenna is cut for 263.000 MHz, which is about the center of the MilSat frequencies"

Here are some links to the Milsat Frequencies
