With the coming of the next Hurricane season starting in a few days, just a couple of timely notes;

A. The famous Hurricane Hunters don't use HF on a regular basis. They're mostly on satellites, and only use HF as a backup - usually when the link is down. Any lists that you see mentioning 'alpha', 'beta', frequency designators should be ignored (The last time I looked, the Pop'Comm lists were horribly out of date). The original transmitters, and antennas were located at Holmstead AFB and were decimated by Hurricane Andrew in (I think it was ) '92.

B. There are 2 related frequency lists which are linked on our utility monitoring wiki. They are some of the most accurate stuff around. Combine that with the schedules found in the last MT, and you should be good to go. Keep those 2 lists bookmarked; they are constantly reviewed and updated during the season as more information becomes available.

Excellent information. I have a feeling that based on weather forecasts for this upcoming season, it's going to be a long and expensive one for residents along the coastal areas. Already, some insurance companies are not renewing coverage policies in many counties in Florida and Texas. Moreover, now would be a good time to check your preparedness lists to make sure that every thing is ready to go, especially any communications needs that need to be addressed.

By now those of you that have looked at the links have realized that we're not talking about a handful of freqs - there are simply so many of them, dialing around to find activity isn't going to work well. We have a seperate Radio Control Software wiki which has a category for many receivers for which we don't have Wiki pages...you can find these toward the bottom of

http://wiki.radioreference.com/index.php/Radio_Control_Software

Some very well known and well supported software includes RXPlus, Shortwave Log and many others. For those that own a Sangean ATS909 (or the RS DX398, or one of its several clones) the ATS909 Programer package is a rare find - something that programs portables. A review on RadioIntel is also linked here.
