I know there's not really anything us as scanner listeners can do about it, but is there really any reason for regular Hutchinson PD calls to be encrypted? If data was that sensitive, most (if not all) patrol vehicles have MDT computers, share the information there. I'm getting sick of hearing all the hiss and noise on the Hutch PD channel. Now its starting to bleed over to the county sheriff (although not as bad). I will be getting a Pro-18 scanner here soon and it is frustrating to know that we as citizens are being kept in the dark because some slick-talking idgit said the big e word and everyone got excited.

Listen to the county and state systems that have talk groups
For your area, or any interop frequencies. One of those should
Tell you if something big is going on.

Could program in the input frequencies (mobile side) used by
Hutchinson, that will tell if something is happening nearby, if you hear
A lot of activity on those frequencies walk around the block
And videotape

As for why they would encrypt dispatch, could be because of
Broadcasting or scanners being used by criminals to know
The cops are on their way so drop everything and run, could
Be to not be held accountable, could be payback for the
Media

For the most part, dispatch is in the clear. I know of a few portables that are in the clear. The mobiles in the patrol vehicles are the ones encrypted.

Give it up. Steaming about it will not change anything. This is a dead horse that has been beaten to a pulp. Time to move on to other comms that are in the clear.
