I am looking to monitor the police frequencies, but I have a few questions. I was told that the Troop A Police are now dispatching on talkgroup 5180. What is a talkgroup and how can I tap into that? I would also like to know what frequency/channel/talkgroup the east baton rouge parish dispatch is using at the moment? and what the difference is between a channel, a talkgroup, and a frequency is? Thank yall so much.

Sounds like you need to do some basic research on trunking systems, and in particular, the P-25 digital system that LWIN uses. There is a great deal of information here on RR, you just have to dig in and learn it.

LWIN is a digital network, so a digital capable trunktracker is required. These are the Uniden BC396T, BCD996T (these 2 have recently been superceded by....) BC396XT and BCD996XT. In the Radio Shack world, it's the PRO-106 or PRO-197. GRE has the PSR-500 and PSR-600. You can read about all of these models by clicking on the model name in this article
