Here is my plan/ question on the EDACS system can you turn the ESK on only for certain chaneles (talk groups) becuase I understand that the PD need secure comms on like thier SWAT vice, undercover wwarrant service and some tactile chanels but they dont need to have secure on disptach ect so i am going to write and go throught the normal public speil that it imrpoves public saftey and asist in diasters ect and ask them to turn esk off if it is possible on certain chanels and if not then at least give us the FD they dont really have a need for secure comms so we can have at least something

There is no selectivity with ESK, it is either on or it is off.

Once you are able to see better, you might want to spend some time educating yourself on the inner workings of a trunked radio system before trying to start a "grass roots" letter writing effort.

ESK is a control channel encryption scheme and has nothing to do with talkgroup level encryption.

ESK affects the control channel only. It isn't encryption. It's just a different form of EDACS. It is meant to be different enough that older equipment can't function when it is turned on. The radios that can understand ESK have more stringent programming requirements. It's much harder for someone to program a bootleg radio that can actually transmit on the system. The downside is it is also harder to program a receive only radio. ESK doesn't prevent anyone from listening ... but it does keep unwanted radios / users off the system.

My approach was to ask a few media outlets if they'd stream their city-supplied (for a fee?) Provoice radios online.

One radio station didn't respond.

Another radio station said they don't have such radios.

A TV station said they were affraid the city would take their radios back if they did such a thing.

Are they not able to maintain fair, balanced reporting? News room: "Oh no, we can't report that. We'll lose our shiny radio."

I suspect the real reason is they don't want to give away what they consider to be a competitive advantage to their ... um ... competitors.

having spent 30+ years in San Antonio, the silly council will probably report you to homeland security as a threat. Don't waste your time. The only thing they wil listen to is an idea on how to increase your taxes.

Best of luck. The webmaster/owner of this site tried to get basic information on that system and got the royal 'none of your business' type attitude from everyone involved. You might want to search the site to see if he still has the paper trail that he had going when this system first went online.

Has anyone thought to check recently to see if the ESK is actually still active? I believe that a recent poor review of their communications by an interest group may have caused some sort of change in their system. I would not be surprised if they decided to remove ESK to promote more interoperablitiy (a major shortcomming cited in the report).

Found it interisting on the unit ID's that they have Union Pacific Railroad PD has unit numbers for the county been looking for a dispatch channel for them forever but to no luck. Also Edgewood School PD on there also..Just monitored them today on there channel. guess they have access to county channels also.
