Ok when i bought the pro96 they loaded ScanCat Lite of course it just scans all surrounding counties, so i talked to them and they told me to use win96, seem pretty user friendly, but heres were i get a little confused with it i know the frequncy of my local area but what do i use as the trunk list for it to trunk off of? i have an example of how i set mine up i just want to make sure i did it right. and what i did was is copied the trunk list from ScanCat Lite That was for my local area and copied them over to this under channels it that the right way or the wrong way really if not can some please let me know. because i think i am still picking up other local areas because of the trunk Freq's But not for sure. Thanks Kevin

Welcome to the site Kevin!

By "trunk list" do you mean talkgroup ID's? If so, then you can go about this in one of two ways:
1. Check in the database here to see if they are submitted there, then enter them into the bottom-right table in Win96.
2. Run the scanner in "Open" mode (a "+" sign will appear under that bank) and you will receive all talkgroups as they become active, whether you have them programmed in or not (and don't have them locked out).

Also, make sure you set each channel to "MOT" as well as the bank.

Kevin,
It appears you have selected sites from the Colorado DTRS system. Some of your frequencies are voice channels and need not be programmed as the scanner functions better using CC only. This setup would require programming the Alt CC's and they too are in the listing.

The attached pix is a Win96 Web Import using your site selections. You also have a few voice frequencies listed for sites which you do not have the Controls and Alts listed. If in fact these are valid, you may need to group those CC's in the setup also.

The "Blank freq" spacing is a result of studies indicating that the scanner preforms better if set up using multi control channels in a single bank.

I've also placed your UHF conventional freq at the end of the list, otherwise, it would also have a "blank freq" in that spot.

Enjoy your new scanner... Radio Shack advised you well regarding Win96.

Frank,

I like that example you gave, but could I offer a suggestion. In my experience, that 29 MHz frequency ends up picking up static and hence opening the squelch on really nothing. I would recommend using 1300 MHz where power line noise, lightning crashes, etc. are less likely to be a factor.

Lou,

I must agree cause you've been involved in the "studies". I need to update my new VA STARS bank accordingly. Thanks for the tip.

Also to Kevin,

If this is indeed the Colorado system, you may get overwhelmed with help if you address your issue in the Colorado forum. Outstanding bunch of Scannist in your state.

W5JSS and fmon you gave me awsome examples on what to, but i feel really stupid because i am new at this whole police scanning thing and i think it is awsome sense i got in to it. ok it might make it easier and if you all dont mind helping me. Say i just started out fresh with this unit nothing on it no frequency's, could you give me mabey some help on the first things to do and how i could just get it set up to listen to my local area. i like the example fmon gave. Mabey this will help to i am also not about this trunking thing thats were i think its getting me confused. Say i have my frequency
Commerce City 460.42500 now do i have to have some other frequency's to go with it (witch i was thinking like the trunking freq's.) so i can pick up what they are saying and if so what frequency, thats were i get lost, if i have the comm freq. what more do i have to add and what i have to add to get the conversations. I hope this makes sense, thank you all for helping me out. i hope you can bare with me and not give up on me hehe. Thanks All

I figure you must be NW of Denver in Broomfield County. If so, I have the trunking system (with Lou's corrections) plus three conventionals in Win96 format if you need it. Also can load the Denver EDACS system system in a second bank.

In the meantime this RR Wiki Pro-96 programming shortcut may help to manually program the scanner.

This attached zip w/Win96 file has banks setup as follows.

0. Colorado DTRS
1. Denver EDACS
2 Adams County with Flt for Life
3. Colorado SPD conventional
4. Buckley AFB
5. Aurora EDACS
6. Arapahoe Co

Note: Win96 has the extended frequencies box checked on the settings page, this will allow you to scan the 764 MHz conventional Public Safety Interoperability for Arapahoe Co. The scanner cannot program these frequencies without this Win96 exclusive feature.

Do you have to put in a freq.? Can't just leave it 0.00000?

No it has to be a frequency the scanner will try to look at 0 is blank or nothing and will treat it like nothing is there.

In this pic, the RX Mode needs to be MOT for the trunked freqs and the Type pulldown needs to be changed to MOT.

BTW, you can open both your file and mine in Win96 and use the Copy Bank in the Edit Minu and copy banks from yours to mine or the other way.
