i just bought a pro-83 and would like some info.

After reading this site for almost 3 hours i have learned many things, some i already forgot but any who, i am totally new to this whole scene and i must say i am very interested. Now to my questions,

The pc/if cable? any particular one to purchase?

Is there any way to make this unit have trunking? If so will brutel asst. in this process?

and pretty much any other advice would be welcome.

If you bought this scanner thinking it could be made to trunk, I'm afraid you made a bad choice. This scanner cannot trunk, and neither BuTel- nor any other manufacturer - can make it. The firmware simply won't support it.

Insofar as software goes, if you want freeware, I understand there is a program called 'Load83' that is available on the PRO83 Yahoo group. Of course, in the commercial market, I think you'll find Arc83 to be the champ.
I'm not sure about the cable; however, the Scancat Lite Plus page on the Scancat website lists the various scanners it supports, and more importantly, the required cables. I am not advocating the program, just the data therein :wink:

The 83 is a fine little unit for what it does, but it doesn't do much. I bought mine for $60 just for the Signal Stalker feature.

This is the most fun scanner I've owned in over 30 years; very sensitve and selectivity is terrific. Every time I use it I want to contact the scanner company and tell them I enjoy it!

The PRO-83 is really a sweet little scanner. When they had the half-price sale last Thankgsgiving ("Black Friday") I bought enough for the whole family.

Anyway, NO it won't trunk. It doesn't cover the MIL Air band BUT....Signal Stalker perfomance is OUTSTANDING.

I haven't tested it formally yet, but I'm reasonably sure that SS outperforms Close Call on my BCD396T.

At home I was getting SS hits on public safety mobiles (VHF High in my area) at well over 1/2 mile. Portables/HTs at 1/4 mile. All with the stock antenna. I know that CC on the 396T won't do that ....but of course it will do EVERYTHING else.

When I'm out and about scanning conventional systems (GMRS, HAM, Air, Rail Road, etc, etc) I'd much rather carry my $50 Pro-83 than my $550 396T.

ARC-83 software is EXCELLENT too. The only drawback is that you can't DOWNLOAD from the scanner.

FYI: The cable number from RS is: 20-289 (Lists at $24.99) This one also works for the PRO-92/94B/95/96/97.

Note: This is the WHITE cable. Make sure you don't get a 20-048 (Black cable with software). It won't work.

buttsrob / I'm off to work, but didn't know I could use the same cable with the 83 & 95. I just got the cable yesterday, and started to play with Win95. I have MANY questions on that (later). Where do I find Arc83 software?
