:?: Well i got my bc 898t, and read the owners manual, and still cant figure it out to well, so what do all the buttons mean and what do they do?
"src" what is that?
And it seems that if i program a priority channel then scan in trunk mode i hear NOTHING ??
I am new to this trunking thing and therefore dont understand all the buttons/lingo etc.....
Uniden should understand that not everyone who buys one of these automatically knows how to use it and all it's features.
Anyhow, any help will be appreciated.
Thanks
Jim

I don't know how to insert a link, but on this website under forums you will find a forum for Uniden scanners, then in it there is a lot of discussion on the 898t. Good luck!

PROGRAMMING THE BC-898T

Hi Jerry, thanks for the reply, but as of yet i have not found any posts as to how to program it, i have tried the "talk group ids" and could not get it going, tried inputing frequencies, it scanned, but seemed that the "Data" button did absolutely no good, frustrating to say the least.
Wish it was easier to figure out what all this stuff does.........
Still lost
Thanks
Jim

PROGRAMMING

Yes, i am trying to program in San bernadino co. Sheriffs and Los Angeles ( which i dont know what system they use) Co. Sheriffs first.
I have enter them by frequency and then when i pressed scan nothing appeared on the screen, except when there was a transmission it would show some numbers, which i found out are the talk groups, so then i tried programming it with talk group rather than frequncy and i didn't get anything.
Also, when i push the data button, it seems to do nothing ?
Maybe i'm trying TOO HARD to learn this fast, the manual isn't as specific as i'd like.
And then i notice there are lists as well as banks ?
Wish they had a BC-898T for dummies book
Anyhow thanks for the reply, i know once i get pass this learning curve, "the light will come on" and it will be easy.
Thanks
Jim

LAPD is a no go, they are APCO25 and this scanner does not do APCO. It sounds as though you programmed the frequencies in as conventional type as apposed to trunk. San Bernadino SO has a lot of differant sites so it is hard to focus on one as I have no idea which you would use. They are all MOT typeII so the process will be the same for which ever site you program. To start press and hold trunk till you hear a few beeps and see the bank and trunk indicators flashing on the screen. Select the bank to be programmed and remember only one site per bank. Once that is done you will select the system type, for you it will be E2-800. You will then see 1 Pro9 F, press "E" and begin entering the freq's. That should get you into the ballpark and allow you to ID search.

AWESOME

Grea, thanks a million i'll be giving it a try tonight, i know for sure that san bernadino is trunked but, los angeles shreiff is wierd, IE: you can hear dispatch and then when the car or officer/unit is talking you hear beep-beep-beep-beep during thier transmission?, would that be trunked ? or ???
Thanks again

It sounds like the officer's are encrypting what they are saying. If so, you won't be able to hear what they are saying, no matter what scanner you buy.

There is no encryption. LASO utilizes a unique system where the dispatcher is on the main freq and the mobiles transmit on what would be the input freq if it was indeed repeated. However, for whatever lame reasons they choose NOT to have the units traffic go through a repeater and in its place, those BEEP BEEP BEEPs indicate that someone is transmitting on the inputs. Units in the field cannot hear what other units are saying and dispatchers do a lot of repeating of what has already been said because of that. When there is an incident, units switch over to a tac channel and a normal repeater-type operation is in use.

LA is conventional-digital, they are not normally encrypted. If you do not have a digital scanner it will sound very odd.
