In addition to Public Safety, I monitor Military Air, Local Gov, Utility Companies, FRS/GMRS, 2-Meter Ham, FBI, DEA, Customs/Border Patrol, Coast Guard.
There is A LOT that is digtial. However, being on the other coast, I don't know for sure in your area what is digital, and what is not.
As for what else to listen to: Police, Fire, EMS, Aircraft, Military (including USCG if you're near the water), Private business...
The list could go on.
The 780XLT is a good scanner, one of the best made. I have two. However, as more and more agencies go to digital, you might start looking in that direction. Perhaps a post in the CA forum would tell you what might best suit your needs.
Long beach isnt digital, but several cities in the area including Los Angeles are. I would look at the 796D if you are looking at a base/mobile or a 396t for a handheld. Too bad they dont have a base with the 396 features.
I see you posted this in the RadioShack forum.
Where you thinking of exploring their brand ? If so, here is a link to their scanners. Check it out and see what looks interesting. No doubt someone on here owns a model you may be interested in and you can ask questions from that point.
That's what I would do - wait for the base version of the BCD396T. It may be a year out (or more... or less), but that will give you a chance to get caught up on things and evaluate your needs (and possibly save up).
