• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Jake-
Trust me on this: Stick with scanners. Programming professional
radios takes a lot of experience and if done wrong can cause major issues
for authorized system users
Programming professional radios is for trained personnel only.
And before you ask: No I am not angry. Just trying to help you out. :)
Stick with scanners buddy.
Thanks!

Public safety radio

Most PS radios are designed to work with one system (P25, Mototrbo, etc.) There is no radio available that can cover all of the digital types and frequencies.

Sorry, but no scanner will work on OpenSky and since any radio on that type of system would need a valid login, even if you got a commercial radio that worked on OpenSky, it still wouldn't work without the login (just like a computer won't let you onto your banking site without a valid login).

Because some people (not you) have such stupid and annoying signatures, many of us turn off signatures, so many never see yours or anyone else's signature.

Just something everyone needs to keep in mind.....

I agree. Jake is a nice kid. Some people have obviously personally worked with him. Everyone posting in these forums needs to be a little bit more tolerant. If you think someone is trolling you, read some previous post history for context. Its not a deep dark secret, folks.

DO NOT ASK ME FOR HELP PROGRAMMING YOUR RADIO. NO.
Your only reasonable option is one of the current generation scanners that do P25 trunking (including Phase II TDMA). You can get into one of those for several hundred dollars.

OpenSky is not monitorable. Except by a radio that is authorized and part of the specific OpenSky system that is at issue. No scanner will monitor it at any price.

What else will a scanner be unable to touch?

Anything that's encrypted.
ProVoice, usually associated with EDACS systems.
MotoTRBO in any format
NXDN in any format

The two way radio option is, as described earlier, not for the inexperienced. There are WAY too many ways to get into trouble with that sort of a radio. Consider that those radios are DESIGNED to talk on those systems. You have to do some very cute tricks to make them NOT transmit while still being able to listen, and some of those tricks require deep knowledge of the radios and/or the systems.

No single commercial radio will even handle a combination of EDACS and Motorola formatted trunking systems. (Smartnet, Smartzone, Astro)

Granted, it is fun to mess around with these radios (as I do) but I do not recommend that you do it. If you do, you WILL be venturing into the shadows. You WILL make mistakes. Radios that you didn't
intend to transmit, WILL transmit and you will have to figure out how to stop them from doing it before somebody notices. If that somebody is NICE about it they'll just deny your radio on the system. If
they're a hard@$$ about it they'll try to find you.

Buy a new scanner with all the bells and whistles. Please. You'll get to hear more than you could with any SINGLE mobile or portable public safety radio and never run the risk of getting into troublesome territory in the process.
