I need advise on the best way to install an antenna?

I'm going purchase an discone antenna for my RS 2052 base scanner and need some good advise on installing it. I don't want my house burned down by lightning.
I have some 1-1/4" and 1" od galv. coated pipe already that I could use.
My conditions:
-singel level ranch style w/ 5' attic space, if used inside, no more than a
20' run total
-if outside, no restrictions but want to keep it looking nice. and safe !!
-could mount mast on brick chimney in rear, above roof line, 100' run,
would this need a grounding wire ran to the ground w/stob or will the
chimney be the ground?
-could mount mast in ground away from house, bury 60' of line, 100' run
total
-could mount mast in ground beside house at room where base is, to
above roof line, 40' run max

I was thinking of the latter, use approx 33' of metalic pipe, bury about 3'
in the ground in concrete, anchor w/ brace on side of house.

best thing to do is look into your local codes...but ground everything to a 4' copper ground rod at min.

Your "latter" is the best idea. Put mast 1' into ground. Bolt mast to facia board below roofing. Use 20' of mast. That gives you a grip on the bottom and about 10' high. I've been in my house 35 years. Have two antennas bolted to shop this way and have a double decker scaffold for several other antennas. Only ONCE did I ever have an antenna show damage from lightning. The biggest danger is from a strike on the power line. I've had two of those that took out some equipment that was not protected with a MOV device. Good Luck, Larry
