Good Morning,

In going to submit some new "info" on some verified agencies "traffic", I noticed
in the form "suggestion" that the "PL" or "tone" be submitted. I really DON'T
remember if I've posted this question before. Part of my "maturing benefits",
(dementia), I guess.

Now, the scanners I have don't seem to have the de-code capability on them to
allow me to "see" the "tone" frequencies (PL, CSQ, etc.)

So my questions are"

#1. What brand or model allows you to do this?

#2. Is this feature in the Computer-Aided software hooked to the scanner?

#3. Is there a seperate device I can get that will tell me the "tones" in order to
submit them.

I've looked to verify the data in the F.C.C. database after I've logged the agency.
However, I can't seem to see the "tones" listed on the form.

ANY and ALL help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. I don't know
how many RR scanner members we have in the Shreveport, LA area, but I do
want to be "accurate" when submitting data.

Respectfully,
73 (Best Regard)

You won't find PL tones in the FCC database. A lot of scanners have PL decode, some even have an optional board you can buy. I'd list the ones available but it would take too long, you could look in the Wiki and find which models have PL/DPL etc.

There are a bunch of them. My Pro-97 handhelds and my Uniden 796 and 996 mobile/desktop units all do it. My older scanners do not.

no

I suppose so, but it may need a discriminator tap to catch the lower tones.

Tones are not an FCC issue. Sometimes the frequency coordinators get into tones, sometimes not.

If you do not have the tone gear, just submit the frequencies and someone else can build on what you have done.

If you decide to buy a scanner for this reason, some are faster than others. The Pro-97 is very fast at identifying tones. The 796 is painful to watch. I have not tried it with the 996.

All newer Unidens (BC246T, BCD396T, BR330T, BCD996T, BCT15) decode PL and DPS near instantaneously.
