I figured out how to use free scan software and get channels to my scanner. But I can't add custom frequencies I just can't figure it out. It's pretty neat to hear the police talking back-and-forth and all, but I'm not sure how close they are to me.

What do you mean by 'custom frequencies'? You can use FreeScan's editor to type in your own, but the editor is rather klunky (it's definitely not one of FreeScan's strong suits...). Much better to import the frequencies from our database - and since you are a subscriber, that's available to you. Or you can use EZ-Grab to pull data from other sources, like spreadsheets.

FreeScan's user guide is available (and is stored in our wiki) from within FS itself (on the top toolbar, select Help / Online Help or from here...

FreeScan User Guide - The RadioReference Wiki

and there's a couple of YouTube videos linked at the bottom

Be specific about your problem - someone will respond...what exactly is your issue? Mike

What kind of scanner do you have? There's no such thing as a BCD 390 6 XT. Did you mean 396XT? If so, you can add "custom" frequencies by hand. Just hit HOLD. Then type the frequency you want. Then hit E/yes, then hit the period/no. Then select the correct system by rotating the volume knob. Then hit E/yes. You're done. Hit scan to resume.

If you are new to trunking systems and Uniden's DMA approach to programming, no doubt you will be frustrated at first. Only you know how much time you are willing to put into this. I bet in a few days you could be up to speed with the BCD396XT and Freescan. Lots of help here, YouTube and the rest of the web. But perhaps not. You might be better off selling it and consider a Home Patrol-II (or I) instead.

Scanning is a great hobby. I hope you can manage through the learning curve to enjoy it!
