My RTL-SDR.COM V3 dongle is on a USB extension cable to take the strain off my laptop USB port.
I still don't fully understand what was bothering the OP.

Yes, that was also my concern. But what is his reference about carpet; a fire hazard?

Ha! Drama was not my intent, but open electronics on the carpet tends to attract dirt, dust and possibly bugs or spiders that like warm places and who knows if they could cause an issue to the electronics. Static discharge was lower on my list as it's not physically moving around. Now someone mentioned OCD... possibly! I like my electronics enclosed (protected), so maybe he has a point there.
