But I don't and I feel stupid.

Are the input frequencies of a trunked system encrypted if the system is encrypted?

Yes as there wouldn’t be much point in spending money on encryption if you could just listen to the inputs.

Yes. Encryption is end-to-end, meaning the encoding and decoding is done within the subscribers, not the infrastructure. In other words, the system doesn't care if the bits are clear or secure, it simply passes them through unmolested. That's why the encryption keys are loaded into the subscribers.

Kudos on this post and your intuitiveness, although you don't have many post on radio reference you definitely get it and probably know that this thread could go on and on with the repeat of the answer explained in detail, including going off topic. Not sure if the mods will honor your requests as there's no reason to close it but when they eventually do it will be because your question has been answered...

Again, kudos on your intuitiveness. :)

I wondered the same thing once and I decided to find out. I entered the repeater inputs into a scan list and drove in circles around the block that surrounds the local police station during shift change. I knew that many units would be going 10-8 on the radio for the oncoming shift and the outgoing shift going 10-7 so I knew there would be numerous mobile and portable radios making transmissions in that area during that time. I received nuthin, nuttin, nada, nut 'n honey (uniden scanner muting the encryption.) Well . . . that little experiment quickly answered that question.
